John Abbott, played primarily by Jerry Douglas, was introduced on The Young and The Restless in 1980. He is the founder of Jabot Cosmetics in Genoa City. He was a prominent character until his role was written off from the show in 2006.
His character was introduced as a single father to his three adolescent children. In 1972, his wife and high school sweetheart Dina Mergeron left him. As a result, John's children grew up mostly with the help of their maid, Mamie Johnson.

John's death on The Young and The Restless came as a shock to the fans in 2006. John's lack of presence on the show started after his imprisonment for accidentally killing Tom Fisher. He started abusing drugs and his health deteriorated.
John suffered another stroke and this time went into a vegetative state. His family decided to honor John's DNR and let him pass away peacefully. He was surrounded by his loved ones while his last wish was honored.
Following his death, it was revealed that he had excluded Gloria from his will. To add more drama, her marriage with John was declared invalid as she was still legally married to Tom. This gave rise to a legal battle between Gloria and the Abbott family.

John continued appearing on The Young and The Restless even after his death. His spirit or hallucination was a recurring character on the show. His spirit helped his children navigate through life by offering them advice when they needed them the most.
John's spirit helped Jack to sort out ethical and personal dilemmas and also helped Ashely. In 2015, when Ashley was suffering from a brain aneurysm, John visited her which helped comfort her.
John last appeared on the show to help Jack when he was dealing with the aftermath of Billy and Phyllis's affair. He encouraged Jack to forgive them and move past it.
