General Hospital had a major development when it came to the feud between Sonny Corinthos and agent John "Jagger" Cates. After Cates escalated his feud with Sonny to another level by trying to have his daughter, Kristina, jailed for the death of her unborn child, Sonny took matters into his own hands and shot Jagger Cates dead.
Sonny Corinthos from General Hospital is a mobster and has quite a checkered past, which began his feud with Jagger in the first place. Jagger had been pursuing a vendetta against Sonny for the way he treated his late wife, Karen Wexler. However, once Jagger used Sonny's daughter to get to him, he crossed a line Sonny couldn't overlook.

Sonny Corinthos has been a prominent presence in General Hospital since 1993 and has been played by Maurice Bernard in most of his appearances.
He was introduced as a mob goon who ran the strip club known as "The Paradise Lounge" while working for Frank Smith. It was during this time that Sonny committed the crimes that would make him an enemy of Jagger Cates.
Jagger's ex-wife, Karen Wexler, used to work at the nightclub despite being underage, at 17 years of age. Sonny kept her in the line by supplying her with drugs and even got into a sexual relationship with her.
Jagger would continue to nurse a grudge over these transgressions for years, and after becoming an FBI agent, he was all too willing to use the leverage of law enforcement to go after Sonny.
That would lead to numerous confrontations between the two throughout General Hospital before the fateful showdown at the Quartermaine estate. On the April 9, 2024 episode, he was assaulted by Sonny's men before Carly Spencer drove them away (later revealed to also be on Sonny's orders). On July 30, 2024, he made a failed attempt to provoke Sonny into attacking him.
However, when Jagger began using Kristina to get to Sonny, the provocation yielded far better results. Jagger initially tried to frame Kristina for the attempted murder of Ava Jerome and hired agent Boyle to murder Ava herself once she became a loose end. He then proceeded to charge her with manslaughter for the accidental death of her own baby and tried to imprison her in a holding cell.
This attempt to use Kristina to get to Sonny prompted Kristina to lash out at him and emphatically reject his efforts to get her to turn on her father. Sonny, in the meantime, agreed to meet Jagger at the Quartermaine estate and settle matters once and for all.
Despite Sonny's earlier indications that he might cave in to Jagger's demands and allow himself to go to prison, he eventually took a much more drastic course of action. When Jagger arrived to meet him, Sonny correctly deduced that he would arrive without any backup, eager to take all the glory for himself.
That allowed Sonny to settle things more emphatically. Holding Jagger at gunpoint, Sonny told him that by going after his daughter, he went too far, pulling the trigger as Jagger slumped to the ground. Sonny even shot a second time to make sure Jagger was dead.
With this drastic decision, Sonny brought his vicious feud with Jagger Cates to a decisive end.
