Brad Maule played Tony Jones, who was introduced in 1984. Initially a skilled neurosurgeon, he soon got himself entangled in his personal and professional life during his tenure on General Hospital. He was the brother of Frisco Jones, whose storyline initially featured the romance with his wife, Tania Roskov. She died after being a victim of an accident while in their car.
Besides, it was during this short time that Tony adopted their daughter B.J. when her mother died. One turning point in Tony's life is when his wife is involved in a bus accident and falls into a coma from which she becomes brain-dead, and he, in his heartbreaking decision, agrees that B.J.'s heart be donated to save Maxie Jones, the daughter of his good friends.
Tony's later years were a lifetime of bitter fruit and bad decisions from his failed marriage to Bobbie Spencer to his fall into the overall bitterness that came from a nervous breakdown. He redeemed himself but was shortly killed off in 2006 during the encephalitis outbreak in Port Charles and marked an end to his character's tragic life.
What caused the conflict between Tony and Carly on General Hospital?
After splitting with his girlfriend, Bobbie Spencer, Tony started seeing Carly, unaware that Carly was Bobbie's estranged daughter. Abandoned by her mother, Bobbie, when quite young, Carly grew to want revenge. With a love triangle developing in front of her, the tension intensified, and the relationships between Tony and the two women became strained. Things took a dramatic turn when Carly got pregnant and did not know which one of Tony or A.J. Quartermaine was the father. Even after the tests later turned out that A.J. was the father, Tony had emotionally bonded himself to the baby, Michael.
With the result being disastrous for him, Tony deteriorated and kidnapped Michael, an incident that nearly destroyed his career and personal life. As revenge, Carly shot Tony in court, a show-stopping moment that left fans shocked.
Tony was acquitted on grounds of temporary insanity, but his liaison with Carly was permanently harmed. He was able to get a second life and redemption through work as a physician and even a father figure to Lucas. Having supported what happened when Lucas came out also served to illustrate his progress, turning his tragic character arc into healing.
