Wes Ramsey reprised the role of the gray character, Peter August, on General Hospital. He appeared on the soap between 2017 and 2022 and exited when the character died.
The complicated character was introduced in Port Charles as a stranger and later had a backstory connecting him to Anna Devane and Valentin Cassadine. Trained to be a devious strategist by his mentor, Valentin, Peter tried hard for redemption for his love for Maxie. However, Maxie was an indirect cause of his death.
The long-running American soap, General Hospital, which has aired since 1963, often presents psychologically complex characters in its storyline. Over the years, the show, which revolves around the medical facility in the fictional city of Port Charles, has branched out to include characters not directly connected to the hospital.
The General Hospital plot also presents complications in relationships arising from unlawful actions. One such example is Wes Ramsey's Peter August, who was manipulated into unlawful activities.
General Hospital: A quick look at Wes Ramsey's Peter August
Peter August, played by Wes Ramsey, landed in Port Charles in 2017 when Jason Morgan, Sam McCall, and Drew Quartermaine hired him to take over the operations of Aurora Media, a publication they had recently acquired. At the time, he was a stranger on General Hospital. However, his origin and backstory were slowly revealed to the audience.
By 2018, the General Hospital viewers learned that Peter was Alex Devane and Cesar Faison's son, Henrik, whom Alex had given up for adoption after birth. Valentin had traced the boy and brought him back to Faison, who sent him to a boarding school. Unloved by his father, Henrik found a friend and father figure in Valentin, who trained him to be a master strategist, albeit immoral.
The lack of love from his father led him to write a semi-autobiographical book titled The Severed Branch under his father's pen name, P.K. Sinclair. 2018 was an eventful year for Peter since, besides publishing his book, he was arrested for the Jason Morgan-Drew Cain conspiracy, from which he escaped.
This was followed by Liesl Obrecht taking him hostage for two months. However, the highlight of 2018 for Peter was helping Maxie deliver her baby, James, Peter's nephew. The event started the first romance in Peter's life, which urged him toward redemption.

On the other hand, for some time, Anna Devane believed that Peter was her son. However, a genetic marker for rheumatoid arthritis present in Peter revealed to Anna in 2020 that he was not her son but her twin Alex's son. However, she kept this fact a secret from Peter for a year.
Again, Peter's turn for the better was stalled when Hank Archer blackmailed him about his past. A desperate Peter took drastic steps to stop his past from catching up with him.
As such, he was sucked back into the world of crime involving complicated events related to Hank, Drew, Andre Maddox, Franco Baldwin, and David Black.
While looking forward to a happy life with Maxie, who was now pregnant with his child, his wedding was destroyed when Valentin exposed his past crimes at the ceremony. He managed to usurp Hamilton Finn's plan to lock him in a hospital freezer and escaped.

Why did Peter August exit General Hospital?
In November 2021, Peter was arrested by the W.S.B. and brought back to Port Charles. Within two months, he managed to escape when Victor Cassadine sabotaged the Pentonville van carrying him to have him killed. Appraised of Victor's scheme, Peter kidnapped Charlotte Cassadine to negotiate his freedom in exchange for the girl.
Peter had also kidnapped his and Maxie's daughter, Louise, along with Charlotte. After letting Victor take Charlotte, Peter asked Maxie to say goodbye to the baby or join them in Switzerland.
Maxie bargained to go with him only if he let Louise stay in Port Charles. When Maxie tried to escape, Peter caught up with her as Maxie's mother, Felicia, spotted her daughter.
Felicia hit Peter on the head with a tire to save her daughter, causing Peter to slip down a slope. Anna stayed by his side as Peter died from his injuries, and Maxie left.
