Spencer Cassadine on the ABC soap opera General Hospital was born on-screen on February 16, 2024. The character was introduced on the show as the son of Nikolas Cassadine and the late Courtney Matthews.
Spencer spent most of his childhood in European boarding schools. Several child actors played the part until actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez took over the role in 2021 as he arrived in Port Charles. At the end of January 2024, Chavez left the soap opera, initially on temporary grounds due to her other commitments. But later in an X post uploaded on May 4, 2024, he revealed that he exited the show permanently.
He wrote:
"I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that GH gave me, and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors and fellow actors."
The last episode of Spencer Cassadine on General Hospital, aired on January 31, 2024, when the character was presumed dead along with his ex-Esme Prince, as the former couple fell off the cruise. The bodies of the characters were not recovered back then, leaving a cliffhanger for the viewers about the fate of Spencer.
What happened to Spencer Cassadine on General Hospital?
Spencer Cassadine was a central figure on General Hospital since he was born in 2006. He had been involved in many family conflicts, such as questions about paternity and kidnapping plots by his great-grandmother, Helena Cassadine. He navigated a life filled with immense wealth, privilege, and danger.
As a kid, Spencer was famous for his mischievous behavior. He often argued with his cousin, Cameron Webber, and tried to get the attention of Emma Scorpio-Drake. One of the most traumatic experiences that he had was when he got badly burned in a fire at Wyndemere Castle. Despite this, he remained strong and managed to heal from both his physical and emotional wounds.
When he came back to Port Charles as a teenager, he had conflicts with his father, Nikolas, and dealt with their family's complicated history. Later, Spencer developed enmity with Valentin as he believed him to be the killer of Nikolas.
In the past few years, Spencer’s love life took center stage, especially his relationship with Trina Robinson. Even though he was manipulated by his ex-Esme Prince, he stayed loyal to Trina.
His efforts to clear her name during the revenge p*rn scandal made him even more popular among the fans. However, Spencer's morality was tested when he tried to get custody of his half-brother Ace to protect him from Esme.
Spencer met a tragic ending when he and Esme fell off the cruise during a fight on a trip in Paris. Even though Spencer was presumed dead, the fans still hope him to come back to Port Charles.
Why did Nicholas Alexander Chavez leave General Hospital?
Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who played Spencer since 2021, first took a temporary break from the soap opera in early 2024 to shoot the second season of Ryan Murphy's Netflix show Monster. But what was supposed to be a brief absence became a permanent exit when Chavez's name was removed from the General Hospital credits in March 2024.
On May 4, 2024, Chavez announced his exit from the ABC show via his X account. He thanked fans for their support and said that General Hospital had a big impact on his career. In his goodbye message, Chavez said he was thankful for the chance to play Spencer Cassadine, as it "changed everything" in his life.
Chaved further mentioned in his post:
"While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles."
