Réal Andrews, who was last seen as Marcus Taggert on General Hospital in July 2023, confirmed his exit from the show through an Instagram post on October 15, 2024. While answering fans' questions about Marcus's absence from General Hospital for over a year, Andrews confirmed that he had left the show to move on with the “biggest role” of his life, which was under production.
Even though Andrews has left the show for now, the actor ended his video with “never say never" while hinting at the future possibilities of his return.
On the ABC soap opera, Andrews played the role of Marcus Taggert since the character was introduced on the show on December 17, 1996. Marcus has had a turbulent life since childhood, leading to his hatred for Sonny Corinthos and several heartbreaks. During his journey in Port Charles, Marcus served as a police officer at PCPD, trying to resolve the conflict in the town and bring down Sonny.
A recap of Marcus Taggert's story arc on General Hospital
Marcus Taggert’s journey on General Hospital began with a difficult childhood in Brooklyn. He often got into trouble until Officer Deke Woods took him under his mentorship. With Deke’s help, Marcus turned his life around and followed in Deke’s footsteps, becoming a police officer.
But Marcus was heartbroken when Deke was killed, and he believed Sonny Corinthos, Deke’s stepson, was responsible for it. This made Marcus determined to bring Sonny down.
After relocating to Port Charles and joining the Port Charles Police Department (PCPD), Marcus kept up his grudge against Sonny, frequently bending the rules to get him arrested. His mission became personal, especially after the tragic death of Sonny’s first wife, Lily Rivera, in a car explosion.
Marcus again blamed Sonny for it, and his desperation for justice for Deke turned furious. During this period, Marcus also became the legal guardian of Juan Santiago, Lily's son, and got into a relationship with Sonny’s former lover, FBI agent Hannah Scott. However, their relationship ended when Hannah left the town.
In the early 2000s, Marcus' sister, Gia, arrived in Port Charles, bringing more family interactions, especially when their mother, Florence Campbell, joined them. Even with his family around, Marcus kept his focus on proving that Sonny and Jason Morgan were guilty, leading to several showdowns between them.
Marcus also faced challenges in his personal life, including a complicated relationship with Assistant District Attorney Dara Jensen and disagreements with District Attorney Scott Baldwin.
After many years of trying to bring Sonny down, Marcus left Port Charles in 2003. But in 2020, he came back to General Hospital when Police Commissioner Jordan Ashford asked for his help to look into the mysterious death of a fellow officer.
Marcus's return caused more tension with Sonny, especially because Marcus started visiting Sonny's sick father, Mike Corbin. He then got into a relationship with Dr. Portio Robinson, but in 2023, Taggert went through a personal crisis when a DNA test confirmed Curtis was Trina's biological father. Even though he was devastated by the results, he supported Trina in getting to know Curtis.
While dealing with his sadness, Jordan tried to help him by offering him the post of Police Commissioner. Taggert was then last seen in July 2023 as he supported Trina, but his internal conflict and professional responsibilities had broken him down to being an alcoholic.
