Mike was Laura Horton's son, born in 1968 when she was married to lawyer Mickey Horton. Laura did not tell Mickey that his brother, Bill Horton, had raped her and Mike was Bill's son. As such, Mike grew up knowing Mickey as his father.

Later, both Mickey and Mike were shocked to learn the reality of his birth. Mike knew Bill as his uncle but became closer after learning Bill was his father. However, he continued to consider Mickey as his father.

As he became a young adult, Mike married Margo Anderman, who later died of leukemia. His next relationship was with Dr. Robin Jacobs during his residency at Salem University. He was also taking care of his sister, Jennifer Horton. Mike's relationship with Robin could not be officiated since Robin, a Jew, refused to have an inter-faith marriage with a Catholic Mike.

A pregnant Robin left for Israel and gave birth to Mike's son Jeremy. In 1990, on Days of Our Lives, Mike left for Israel to try to be close to his son and live as a family. However, this did not play out smoothly, so Mike returned to Salem City in 1994.

He was appointed the head of staff at Salem University Hospital, where he started an affair with a married Carrie Brady-Reed. He was embroiled in a legal issue with nurse Ali, who sued him for harassment, drugged and kidnapped him. However, Roman Brady arrested her before she could leave with Mike. Mike and Carrie married and moved to Israel to be close to Jeremy.

Mike appeared on Days of Our Lives in 2010 when Alice Horton was on her deathbed. However, before he could meet his grandmother, he met with a car accident, leaving him in University Hospital. Although he tried to get well quickly, Alice died before he was discharged from the establishment.

Mike was last seen on Days of Our Lives in 2022 when he took Jennifer to rehab to treat her opioid addiction. While in town, he also patched up his previous rift with Nancy Wesley.
