General Hospital's Holly Sutton, who's been played by Emma Samms for most appearances since her 1982 debut, is set to return to the soap this September. Holly's storylines have mostly focused on her relationship with Robert Scorpio, her history with Luke Spencer, and her conflict with Victor Newman.
This news of her return was broken by Variety, who also revealed that Lucky Spencer, played by Jonathan Jackson, would be returning as well. No details have been revealed on what plotlines these characters will be involved in when they return to General Hospital.
Holly Sutton has appeared on and off in General Hospital over the years, with her first storyline spanning from 1982-1985, her next appearance lasting from 1992-1993, an extended run from 2006-2020, and recent appearances from 2022-2023, during which time she was briefly recast with Finola Hughes.

Who is Holly Sutton from General Hospital?
Holly Sutton was introduced as a love interest for Luke when she first appeared in 1982. However, the two became estranged after Holly's involvement in an oil scam was exposed. Later after the presumption of Luke's death in an avalanche, Holly ends up falling for Robert Scorpio, and the two get married.
While their marriage goes through a rough patch thanks to the introduction of Robert's ex-wife Anna Devane, the two eventually reconcile and plan a trip to Australia together. However, by the end of Holly's '80s storyline, Robert revealed that Holly died in an apparent plane crash.
Holly reappeared in 1992 when it was revealed that she was actually in a car crash and had been comatose for two years, with Robert not knowing about this because her family refused to tell him. Robert, in the meantime, had gotten engaged to another woman, Anna.
When Robert eventually found out about her survival, he was initially shocked and upset but eventually came to terms with things. He drew up divorce papers to legally end his marriage to Holly and then set out to search for his missing wife, Anna. However, after Robert and Anna seemingly die, Holly tore up the divorce papers in anger.
In her recent appearance in 2023, Holly faced off against Victor Newman, who was plotting to unleash biological warfare upon the world and kill 80% of its population.
The World Security Bureau targeted Victor for a drone strike, and Holly, along with Laura Spencer, Curtis Ashford, Valentin Cassadine, and Drew Cain raced against time to foil Victor's plot and rescue the people he had held captive.
In the end, Victor's captives were rescued and he was seemingly killed off by the WSB's drone strike. Holly meanwhile was seen returning to Australia.
Emma Samms returns to General Hospital after struggling with long COVID
Emma Samms contracted COVID-19 in March 2020 and has since struggled with the symptoms of long COVID-19, which has led her to reduce her involvement in General Hospital. In an October 2022 interview with People Magazine, Emma had said:
"It's an ongoing mass disabling event, and it's been frightening to witness. For me, it's been a battle of the wills to accomplish anything."
With the announcement of her return to General Hospital, it's clear that neither Emma nor her character Holly Sutton, are quite done with the soap just yet. General Hospital airs on CBS.
