Nancy and Craig Wesley were looking for a bone marrow donor for their daughter Chloe Lane in 2002 after the girl was diagnosed with leukemia. Failing to find a match, the couple decided to have another child to provide Chloe with the needed treatment.

After some hiccups, Nancy Miller Wesley got pregnant and delivered the baby on March 7, 2003, at the University Hospital in Salem. The parents decided to name the baby Joy, for the happiness she brought into the family.

As an infant, Joy Wesley donated her bone marrow to her elder sister and soon Chloe was successfully treated for cancer. When later Craig took up a job in New York, Joy relocated to the big city with her parents while her sister stayed in town. While Nancy visited Salem many times for Chloe's sake, fans were curious to see how Joy had turned out.

At birth, the character was portrayed by un-named twins. However, an infant Joy Wesley was played by child actor Aisling Acuna in September 2005. Currently, the adult Joy is being portrayed by AlexAnn Hopkins.
