Nathan Hastings was first introduced to The Young and the Restless in 1984 as a member of Joseph Anthony's organized crime family. However, Nathan ended up helping a private investigator, Andy Richards, to dismantle the network by leaking insider information to him. This agreement granted Nathan immunity and protection despite his crimes.

Nathan reformed himself as a private investigator and joined an investigation agency. He was in a brief relationship with Amy Lewis, a secretary who taught him to read and write. They broke off after Amy left town. He then started dating Dr Olivia Barber.

As a private investigator, Nathan dealt with many cases, one of which was shoplifting. He soon realized that the culprit, Drucilla, was none other than his girlfriend Olivia's estranged sister. Even though she tried to seduce him away from Olivia, Nathan remained loyal and steadfast in his relationship.

Nathan and Olivia got married in 1991. The following year, they became parents to a son: Nathan Hastings Jr., nicknamed Nate. However, the birth was not without its challenges. Olivia developed ovarian cancer after her pregnancy, for which she had to get a hysterectomy surgery performed.

Later in the storyline, due to marital problems, Nathan had an affair with Keesha Monroe. He did not tell Keesha he was married and kept the secret from Olivia. After Keesha met a photographer named Malcolm Winters, she ended the affair with Nathan to start a relationship with Malcolm.

Keesha then discovered that one of her ex-boyfriends had AIDS. After getting herself tested, she realized that she had the ailment, too, which she then informed Nathan. Olivia found out about the affair since she was the one who administered the HIV test on Keesha. Furious, she asked Nathan to leave the house for putting their family at the potential risk of AIDS and for having an affair.

Keesha and Malcolm got married on her deathbed, even as her AIDS infection developed. However, Nathan did not have an emotional reunion with his family. Desperate to see his son, he even kidnaps Nate for a brief time. He did feel guilty a few days later and tried to bring Nate home. However, in the process, Nathan met with a car accident and succumbed to his wounds in the hospital, ending his time on The Young and the Restless.
