Dr. Britt Westbourne was introduced to General Hospital in 2012, when she and Dr. Sabrina Santiago (Teresa Castillo) started working at the hospital. Sabrina has a crush on Dr Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson), who Britt is dating, but she helps Sabrina babysit his daughter Emma anyway. However, things quickly grow sour and Patrick dumps Britt.

In 2013, Britt's story takes a new turn as Dr Liesl Obrecht (Finola Hughes) is revealed to be her birth mother. Britt and her mother scheme together and claim that Britt is pregnant with Patrick's child. However, Patrick doesn't seem to love her, and Britt starts a relationship with Nikolas Cassadine (Tyler Christopher). Patrick tries to fight for full custody of his child but Britt reveals that a sperm donor is the father, not him.

Sabrina and Britt have an argument, during which she goes into labor. Eventually, Sabrina ends up delivering Britt's son Ben with Nikolas. However, Britt's mother, Liesl, kidnaps the child. Nikolas and Britt manage to rescue Ben from Liesl's clutches and return to Port Charles.

Later, it is revealed via flashbacks that Ben is actually the son of Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Lulu Falconeri (Emme Rylan). Britt was just playing the role of their surrogate for the embryo. Even though she tried to keep it a secret, Ben's parentage is revealed and Britt is arrested for stealing Lulu's child. She is released from custody later when she cooperates with the police.

After a brief break, Britt returned onscreen in 2017 with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Bernard). She reunited with her mother in the process. She turned herself in for her role in the fiasco around her father, Faison. While in and out of prison, she met many people in Port Charles. Britt then left a note to her mother saying that she was leaving Port Charles to start a better life.

In 2020, Britt returns to the show and meets up with Julian Jerome (William deVry) for his role in an arraignment. She ends up sleeping with him after the meeting. The next day, Britt goes to meet her mother in prison and sets up a meeting with Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth) at Metro Court. She manages to get her job back at the hospital.

Later, Britt learns that she has Huntington's disease, and she prepares to leave town through the docks. She gets involved in a scuffle and is accidentally scratched with a poisoned hook. She stumbles back home to be with her mother, as the poison slowly kills her in the end.
