Eric Braeden, who plays Victor Newman, the Newman family's patriarch, is an American actor of German origin. Born in 1941 as Hans-Jörg Gudegast, Eric began his acting career in 1960. Initially, he was mostly offered German characters. After getting advice from a contemporary, he took up the stage name Eric Braeden from his hometown of Bredenbek.
Braeden was an athlete and a sportsman with a medal in the National German Youth Championship. He was a soccer player, winning the 1973 National Challenge Cup. He was also a trained boxer and a tennis player who played celebrity sports.
