Rey is brought into Genoa City by the U.S. Department of Justice to take over the J.T. Hellstrom case. He reunites with Arturo, who still holds resentment towards him. His younger sister, Lola Rosales, helps him and Arturo reconcile. He then meets Sharon Newman and they become friends.
As the investigation continues, he finds a shirt with J.T.'s blood in Victor's stables, and arrests Victor for murder and jails him without bail. His wife, Nikki, confesses to killing J.T. As the saga continues, Mia, his long-separated wife, arrives in the city and stirs up drama. This leads the investigation to revolve around Newman, Abbott, Victoria, and Sharon. Following that, J.T. is found and the case gets solved.
The soap then sees Rey and Sharon fall in love. He meets her daughter Faith and agrees to move in with her. As they spend time together, Sharon realizes that her relationship with Rey will never be healthy and ends it. However, after a few months, they reunite, but Sharon is diagnosed with breast cancer and has to undergo various surgeries and chemo.
Rey and Sharon get married on New Year's Eve at Society. In the April 22, 2022, episode, Rey gets a heart attack and dies.

Jordi Vilasuso is an American actor born on June 15, 1981, in Miami, Florida. He is popular for his role as Tony Santos on the CBS soap opera Guiding Light from August 2000 until August 2003. He has also played the role of Griffin Castillo on All My Children from 2010 to 2011 and 2013, and Dario Hernandez on Days of Our Lives from 2016 to 2017.
In an interview with the Soap Opera Digest in 2020, Jordi was asked about his first day on set, to which the actor replied:
“I remember walking into this huge hall to rehearse because they didn’t rehearse on set. They used chairs to represent the furniture on set and we’d work things out with the director. The second thing I remember for my first day is that I was going to shoot two guns at the same time."
He further added that he was thrilled to hold two guns at the same time. The actor continued:
"Even though the guns shot blanks, there was a lot of safety to be considered. I don’t know if any of it really got through to me because I was so excited. When we shot it, I was jumping through the air, shooting two Glocks.”
