Jerry Douglas left The Young and the Restless in 2006 when the writers of the show decided to write his character, John Abbott, out of the script by killing him from complications resulting from a stroke.
At the time, the producers of the show felt his story had been told to its natural end. The reason for killing John Abbott was mainly a creative one to allow dramatic developments within the Abbott family since his passing.
Although the on-screen physical presence of John Abbott had ceased, Jerry Douglas continued to make semi-regular appearances as John's spirit, advising and guiding his family.
John Abbott was originally played by Sean Garrison in 1980 on The Young and the Restless. Followed by Brett Halsey from 1980 to 11981. Thereafter, Jerry Douglas stepped into the role in 1982 and played it till 2016. However, Jerry Douglas and Jonathan Stoddard also portrayed the role briefly from 2017 to 2019.
John Abbott's story arc on The Young and the Restless
John Abbott was introduced in the 1980s on The Young and the Restless as the patriarch of the Abbott family, who founded Jabot Cosmetics. Having to cope with the abandonment of his first wife, Dina, in 1972, John raised their children, Jack, Ashley, and Traci, with Mamie Johnson, the Abbott family maid.
John's personal life somehow added drama as he battled with Jack over Jabot. He married the younger Jill Foster, only for her to begin an affair with Jack, which resulted in a divorce. John remarried Jill in 1993. They had a son that year, who was named Billy Abbott. Their marriage then fell apart after Jill had an affair with Jed Sanders.
John briefly reconciled with Dina before suffering a stroke. He later won custody of Billy, shipped him off to boarding school, and returned to Genoa City in 1999 to aid Jack and Ashley's battle for Jabot.
During the 2000s, John Abbott began an affair with Gina Roma and also took in his granddaughter, Colleen, after she got kicked out of school. Later, he fell for Gloria Fisher, not realizing her sons were Kevin and Michael Baldwin.
After John fell and underwent hip surgery, Gloria nursed him back to health, and he was able to forgive her for her deception. Things became more complex when Gloria's estranged husband, Tom Fisher, blackmailed her. Eventually, John killed Tom in self-defense and was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison.
During his imprisonment, John overdosed on medication and suffered from dementia. After a stroke that left him in a vegetative state, his family carried out his wish for a DNR order, and John died in 2006. Only after his death was a note discovered in which he said he intended to leave Gloria nothing, prompting a bitter fight over his estate.
However, John sometimes appeared as the conscience of his family, mostly to Jack, talking some sense and values. However, even though he appeared to be a ghost, that was all in Jack's head. In 2016, he last appeared to Jack and encouraged him to also forgive Billy and Phyllis for having an affair.
Jerry Douglas is best known for his role as John Abbot on The Young and the Restless. He remained a key figure and central character to most of the storylines of the show until his demise in 2021.
