Kelly Monaco has played Sam McCall on General Hospital since her character's debut on October 1, 2003. She also briefly portrayed Alicia Montenegro in 2005. Although Kelly has been Sam's primary actress for 21 years, Lindsay Hartley stepped in to play the role in some episodes in 2020, 2022, and 2024.
Following its pattern of surprising exits and returns to the show, General Hospital has now written out Kelly Monaco’s character. It has come as a shock to the fans, as reported by Soap Opera Network, the reason behind Kelly’s exit from Port Charles is a creative decision of the makers to kill Sam McCall on the show.
General Hospital: End of the journey of a regular cast member
Kelly Monaco plays the role of Sam McCall on General Hospital. She has been playing the role for over two decades after which now her journey is about to end soon. On August 26, 2024, it was confirmed that Sam would be written out anytime soon.
However, the last episode date of the character is not yet confirmed, it is certain that the event will take place sometime in the fall of this year. Sam’s character will be killed on the show and as stated by the source of Soap Opera Network, actress Kelly Monaco was “blindsided” as she got to know the decision of the makers.
In the episode of August 22, 2024, Kelly Monaco was again swapped with Lindsay Hartley, as Sam appears to mourn the loss of Molly Lansing and Kristina Corinthos Davis’ child. The last time Hartley had filled in for Monaco was when the actress was suffering from a medical condition, however, the reason for the swap this time hasn’t been officially announced.

Kelly Monaco has been a regular cast member of ABC’s longest-running soap opera General Hospital since 2003. Before she got the role in the daytime show, Kelly was best known for her role as Livvie Locke on Port Charles, which is a 30-minute spinoff of GH, between 2000 and 2003.
While addressing her two decades with the show, Kelly in an October 10, 2023, interview with Soap Opera Digest mentioned how she began to play Sam when she was just in her early 20s and as time flies, it had already been 20 years of Sam. She also mentioned how grateful she is to be a part of the soap opera.
“GH is such a legendary show and I consider it my second home,” Kelly said.
Kelly has received two Daytime Emmys nominations, one for her role as Livvie under the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and for Sam under Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Monaco has appeared in over 2200 episodes of GH, from the time she was introduced as a bad girl and con artist who is the daughter of mob boss Julian Jerome and Alexis Davis. The character evolved with time and turned out to be a more responsible and nice woman.
