Viewers of General Hospital saw Lindsay Hartley as Sam McCall on August 22, 2024. The recast came about as Kelly Monaco took a break from the soap. While this is not the first time Hartley stepped in for Monaco, it is likely to be a short stint, as per Soap Opera Digest. There is no word from either Monaco or the production house about the reason behind her absence from the show.
Newly indicted fans of General Hospital may be unaware of Samantha McCall's introduction to the soap in October 2003. Since its inception, the character has been played by Monaco as a regular, while Hartley substituted her three times before this in the role. Hartley's entry into the soap is poised at dramatic turns in the plot as Lulu is expected to come out of her coma and demand Dante's attention. Moreover, the friction between her half-sisters, Kristina and Molly, may escalate.
General Hospital: Lindsay Hartley takes on the role of Sam McCall
In a poignant event of Baby Irene's funeral, Sam McCall arrived with her mother Alexis. The General Hospital episode dated August 22, 2024, saw Sam, among others, at the tragic event. However, in place of Kelly Monaco, Lindsay Hartley was seen playing Sam since the former is on a break.
This is the fourth time that Lindsay is stepping into the role in place of Monaco. She had first appeared as Sam in 2020 and again in 2021. She was last seen playing Sam in January 2024 for one episode when Monaco was unwell. As per Soap Opera Digest, this stint of Hartley as Sam is also temporary, as Monaco is set to continue in the role as a regular. However, how long will Lindsay Hartley stay in Port Charles this time and when will Monaco return is unclear at the moment.
Hartley announced her entry in the substitute portrayal on General Hospital on her Instagram page, tagging her Passions co-star Brooke Kerr. While Monaco's Instagram page shows an invitation for the GH fan club weekend on August 4, 2024, there is no hint about her absence from the soap. As such, there is also no information about how long Hartley will play Sam.
General Hospital: Why is Sam's presence significant currently?
While Sam McCall's story arc had gone into a back burner in the past few months, her story arc seemed poised to get back into center stage. On one hand, she and her family are mourning the death of baby Irene, who is Molly and TJ's baby, but carried by Kristina. Molly and Kristina are Sam's half-sisters, and Kristina is out on bail. Sam is expected to provide support to her mother Alexis as the Molly-Kristina friction pans out.

On the other hand, her relationship is staring at a change as Lulu might come out of her coma. After cutting ties with Jason, she is currently in a relationship with Dante. However, Dante's ex, Lulu, who has been in a coma for four years, is showing some medical issues, leading to Dante's preoccupation with the incumbent Lulu.
While Sam may try to stay with Alexis through her emotional turmoil, she may herself face mental turmoil about Dante's involvement with Lulu's medical state. With the soap hinting at Lulu's return to General Hospital, Sam may have her hands full with her family problems and her romance falling apart.
While Hartley has garnered approval from the soap's fans during her prior stints as Sam, this time around, her performance will be on test as the character goes through some challenging situations.
