High school football schedules in Florida were severely affected by Hurricane Milton. The hurricane, which was a Category 3 at the time of landfall, caused major damage to the Western Central Florida region, and football games were either postponed or canceled.
However, not all the football games from the state suffered that fate as the Florida panhandle, Mid-Central Florida as well as certain parts of South Florida conducted games according to the schedules without any trouble.
Let's take a look at three key takeaways from Florida's high school football week.
3 takeaways from Florida high school football
3. Newberry High School improves to 5-2 after an impressive win over Bradford High School
The Newberry Panthers went ahead with the game against the Bradford Tornadoes as planned despite the hurricane. Both teams came into the game with great starts to the season. Panthers were 4-2, and the Tornadoes were undefeated, winning all six games to begin the season.
It was the Panthers who came out on top on Friday, 21-7. Newberry's record improved to 5-2 and Bradford suffered the first loss of the season. Newberry's defense, led by Jarquez Carter, dominated as the Ohio State commit finished with a stat line of five total tackles and four sacks.
The Panthers will take on the 4-2 Fort White Indians, and the Tornadoes will look to bounce back on the road against the 0-7 Leon High School Lions. Both games will take place on Friday.
2. Chaminade-Madonna wins sixth game in a row after beginning the season 0-2
Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory from Hollywood, Florida won a sixth game in a row against Fort Lauderdale-based St. Thomas Aquinas. It was one of the most highly anticipated games of the Florida high school football season as two nationally ranked teams went head-to-head in a classic showdown.
The Lions took home the victory 29-22 on the back of a dominant ground game. Running backs Derek Cooper and Camari Hall ran for a combined 296 yards on 22 carries and scored four touchdowns. Cooper finished with 191 all-purpose yards, whereas Hall racked up 162 rushing yards.
Chaminade-Madonna, the 17th-ranked team in the nation, will take on the Avant Garde Academy Sharks in the next game, and St. Thomas Aquinas will take on the Monarch High School Knights on Friday.
1. How will FHSAA plan the next set of games after two devastating hurricanes in the span of three weeks?
Florida experienced two devastating hurricanes in the span of three weeks. Hurricane Helene struck the Big Bend region of Florida and was dubbed as the deadliest hurricane to strike the mainland United States since Katrina back in 2005.
Now the question of what the Florida High School Athletics Association will do about the canceled games is on everyone's mind. With only three weeks remaining in the regular season, programs across Florida are in a bind about the postponed games and hope to work something out as soon as possible.
The FHSAA could take a page out of Georgia's book and add an extra week to the regular season. It will be interesting to see how the association handles the issue of the missed games.
