The curtain was drawn on the 2024 Oregon High School Football regular season over the weekend. It was an exciting weekend with teams meeting at different venues across the state for the latest round of games.
There is a lot to unpack as the feeling and atmosphere differ from venue to venue and team to team. Below are our three major takeaways from Oregon high school football Week 9.
Week 9 takeaways from Oregon High School football
#3 Scappoose win its first solo title in seven years
The Scappoose Indians last won a solo Cowapa League title in 2017. They were joint winners last year with Seaside and Tillamook.
Going into their game against Milwaukie in Week 9, they knew what was at stake. They knew they could not afford to miss the opportunity to return the title they hadn't won in seven years.
The Scappoose went on to defeat Milwaukie 54-15, securing the No. 5 seed in the 4A playoffs as well. They face Hidden Valley in their first playoff encounter this week. Scappoose coach Sean McNabb was elated with the win. He said:
“The atmosphere on Friday was electric. We were very disappointed the past two years not winning it outright. Our guys were extremely excited about returning the Cowapa title to Scappoose.”
#2 Greg Grant eases into his final playoffs before retirement
It has been a long ride for Heppner coach, 63-year-old Greg Grant. He is more than just one of the longest-serving Oregon high school football coaches, and is also one of the most successful.
In a career spanning four decades, he has led teams to 348 wins, the third highest by any coach in the state. He also boasts of three state championships, and wouldn't mind securing a fourth one to seal his retirement.
Grant couldn't have asked for his last regular season to go any better. His team is 9-0 and goes into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
#1 Willamette continue its best season run in almost 20 years
Josh Line has completed what is perhaps the biggest turnaround in the Oregon high school football scene this season. He took over the reins at Willamette this season after the Wolverines finished the 2023 season without a win.
In less than a year, he has taken the program to an 8-1 regular season finish, their best since 2007. The program is also heading to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
