In high school football, victory can be elusive, especially for teams entrenched in long-losing streaks. For many players, the struggle becomes a defining part of their experience, with some veterans never knowing the exhilaration of a win.
Players with long losing streaks often face challenges in winning. Let's look at five teams with the longest losing streaks.
5 teams with the longest losing streaks in high school football
#1, Columbia Eagles Football- 87 (Huntsville, Ala.)
Columbia's ongoing losing streak began in 2015. After a 34-16 victory over Ardmore on Oct. 16, 2015, Columbia lost 38-22 to J.O. Johnson on Oct. 23, setting off a chain of defeats that has continued for nearly a decade.
One of the most notable moments in Columbia's streak came in 2020 when it narrowly lost to Tanner 50-40 on Sep. 25, 2020. This game was the Eagle's highest-scoring output during the streak.
With four games remaining as the 2024 season draws closer, Columbia could break the streak.
#2, Glascock County Panthers Football- 82 (Gibson, Ga.)
Glascock County endured one of its most challenging periods during the 1990s. A streak of 82 consecutive losses from 1990 to 1999 tested the team's resolve.
The streak began with a 27-0 loss to Aquinas in the final game of the 1990 season. The following years were filled with frustration as defeat after defeat piled up. While the official record shows a streak of 62 losses, the Panthers finally broke through with a 12-6 victory over Cross Creek after 82 on-the-field losses during the fifth game of 1999 season.
#3, Northside Cougars Football- 80 (Houston, Texas)
The Northside Cougars achieved a historic milestone in Texas high school football during the 1990s. After an 80-game losing streak, the Cougars broke the record with a 19-18 victory over Wheatley.
The streak began in 1985, after a 7-0 win over Austin.
#4, Sturgis Brown Scoopers Football- 79 (Sturgis, S.D.)
Sturgis Brown’s losing streak began after Oct. 17, 1997, when the Scoopers secured a close win against Belle Fourche. They finished 10-7 in that matchup.
However, the following week, they lost to Spearfish 36-16. Sturgis Brown finally broke the cycle of adversity in 2006.
They edged past Rapid City Stevens 22-20 with an impressive 80-yard touchdown pass right at the start of the game.
#5, Diamond-Hill Jarvis Tigers Football- 77 (Fort Worth, Texas)
Diamond Hill-Jarvis’ losing streak spans from 2010 to 2017. It began on Sept. 24, 2010, when the Eagles faced a tough 47-14 defeat against Whitewright, after a previous victory over Dallas Jefferson.
