The second day of the Border League in Las Vegas on Saturday had plenty of storylines, and many of them were told on the court. From a post-Cooper Flagg Montverde Academy trying to find its bearings to standout performances from Mouhamed Sylla and Brayden Burries, Day 2 was full of action and drama.
5 takeaways from Border League Day 2
#1 Brayden Burries' impressive performance in loss vs. new-look Montverde Academy
The Vale star Brayden Burries had an impressive Day 2, scoring a game-high 36 points, seven rebounds and six assists. However, his efforts were not enough as the defending champions, who came to the tournament as the Florida Eagles, escaped with a hard-fought victory, 85-79.
The coaches in attendance were impressed by Burries' performance, as the Day 2 coach polling showed they were scrambling to get the five-star shooting guard, who has so far remained uncommitted.
#2 New-look Montverde Academy looked impressive
When Cooper Flagg was leading Montverde Academy, the Eagles were unstoppable. Now that he is gone, it leaves some room for five-star forward Caleb Gaskins to shine. He and four-star forward Trent Sisley shined during their matchup against Burries and The Vale, showing that the Florida-based team can still get things done.
While they were challenged by the California-based team, the Eagles were still impressive. They also have a deep roster that wants to prove it can win without Cooper Flagg, including five-star Kayden Allen and four-stars Dante Allen, Hudson Greer and Mazi Mosley.
#3 4-Star Center Mouhamed Sylla preparing for official visits after Las Vegas leg of the Border League
Bella Vista Prep center Mouhamed Sylla had a slow start against Big Red on Saturday, looking disinterested in the game. However, as the second half came around, the 6-foot-10 No. 30 recruit in the country showed why so many schools are clamoring for him, getting things done on both ends of the floor.
After the tournament, though, he will be making an official visit to Kansas on Monday, followed by Georgia Tech. He also has potential visits to Alabama and Duke down the line.
#4 Class of 2026 players shine
While much of the attention is directed towards members of the Class of 2025, such as AJ Dybantsa and the Boozer twins, members of the Class of 2026 also showed that they are just as good as their seniors during Day 2 of the Border League.
Another four-star, Darius Bivins, also had a standout performance, finishing with a double-double of 22 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals to lead Bishop O'Connell to a dominating 67-43 victory over Dons Basketball.
#5 College coaches and scouts closely monitor Border League Day 2 games
One of the reasons why the Border League is so important is the number of coaches and scouts that the various colleges and universities send to watch the action in person. Players hoping to go to college and eventually the NBA often play their best games so that they can impress and get scholarship offers.
During Day 2, coaches from various schools, including Alabama, BYU, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Oregon, Louisville and many more, were spotted.
