LSU lost its prize recruit Bryce Underwood to the Michigan Wolverines last week in what is perhaps the biggest coup in this recruitment cycle. Reports over the past few days are indicating, however, that the Tigers are set to lose another commit to either Michigan or their SEC rival Alabama.
Four-star wide receiver Derek Meadows, who has been committed to LSU since July, has been identified as a flip target by Michigan and Alabama. The prospect from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, shunned both programs when he announced his commitment in July after visiting Baton Rouge.
The Michigan Wolverines' chances of flipping Derek Meadows
Meadows, 6-ft-6 and 205 pounds, is the No. 1 prospect out of Nevada per 247Sports, and is a top-10 wide receiver in the 2025 class. Despite a commitment to LSU going back to July, the top Nevada prospect has remained openly courted by other programs, especially Michigan and Alabama.
The four-star receiver visited the Wolverines on Nov. 2 when the reigning national champions hosted No. 1 Oregon at Ann Arbor. And after successfully flipping the nation's top prospect for the 2025 class from LSU, Michigan has been tipped to take it a step further. Recruiting insider, On3's Steve Wiltfong predicted earlier that the Wolverines are favored to flip Meadows.
The Michigan Wolverines would be relying on different factors to complete Meadows’ recruitment including his family's ties to Michigan where they are from originally. Meadows’ father explained the family's connection to Michigan in an interview with On3 in July. He said:
“Home state for me and my wife. We’ve always been Michigan fans growing up. You’re going to be a Michigan fan or Michigan State fan growing up. We were Michigan fans. Have a lot of close ties with folks there. A lot of my family is there. Derek has a lot of family and friends. Great educationally and doesn’t hurt to be National Champions. A lot of support academically."
However, the Michigan Wolverines are not the only program actively pursuing Meadows. Following the loss of their headline wide receiver commit Caleb Cunningham to Ole Miss, the Crimson Tide are looking for a replacement. Meadows has been named one of Alabama’s targets for the spot, as well as Florida commit Naeshaun Montgomery.
Meadows appears to be a priority for the Crimson Tide, however. They were a top contender in his recruitment before his pledge to LSU and may be back for the decisive contest in the coming days.
