Fans are not forgetting Jerzy Robinson’s wish for a dream matchup with NBA star Anthony Edwards in a hurry. Several fans made subtle and overt references to the dream matchup in the comments under USA Basketball’s Instagram post announcing Robinson’s 5x5 Female Athlete of the Year award nomination.
An Instagram user, made a subtle reference to the 16-year-old's claim that she could beat Edwards 11-10 in a “first to 11” contest and said:
“Ant 11-0”
“11-0," another user wrote.
“Ant better," a fan said.
Others commented with GIFs and memes of Edwards, subtly referencing what Jerzy had said. However, the reactions weren’t all about Robinson’s dream 1v1 with Edwards. An Instagram user drew a comparison between Robinson and Orlando Magic power forward Paolo Banchero:
“Reminds me of Paolo Banchero game and all, gotta be his lil sis lol.”
“She’s tuff,” another Instagram user wrote.
What Jerzy Robinson said about playing Anthony Edwards
Jerzy Robinson appeared on the Sloane Knows podcast in November. She responded to a question about her dream 1v1 matchup and said:
“I want to play against Ant for sure. Yeah I want to play against Ant.”
When further asked how many points she’d get against Edwards in a “first to 11” contest, she said it depended on who went first. She expressed confidence that she'd beat the Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard if she got the ball first.
“If I get the ball first, I’m going to say 11-10 me. I’m always saying me and it’s going to be me till it’s proven wrong," Robinson said.
Robinson played for USA at the 2023 FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship in Mexico, she led the team to the crown with an MVP performance averaging 17.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.
She repeated her success for the country at the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup. She averaged 20.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg, winning another MVP honor in the process. This accomplishment earned her a nomination in USA Basketball's 5x5 female athlete of the year category.
