After summer practice, the No. 11 recruit in the Class of 2024 Liam McNeeley has started 10 games for Dan Hurley's team this season. The Richardson, TX, native became the Huskies' highest-ranked recruit in 13 years, a mark that was previously held by four-time NBA rebounding champion Andre Drummond.
The 6-foot-7 small forward committed to the Huskies on Apr. 26 after considering offers from 22 other programs including Indiana, Kansas, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Alabama and LSU, among others.
However, in his high school career, Liam McNeeley played for three schools- Pearce (Richardson, Texas), John Paul II (Plano, Texas) and Montverde Academy in Florida.
As a sophomore in John Paul II, he averaged 17.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 5.0 apg, 2.0 spg and 2 bpg before he transferred to Montverde in his senior year. There, he averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest and was selected to play in the 2024 McDonald's All-American Boys Game.
It's sufficient to say that McNeeley played alongside some top talent, with his teammates being ESPN No. 1 recruit Cooper Flagg (Duke), No. 8 Derik Queen (Maryland), No. 13 Asa Newell (Georgia), No. 24 Robert Wright III (Baylor) and No. 42 Curtis Givens (LSU).
In the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference, the No. 3 small forward in the 2024 Class scored 13.7 points, grabbed 4.5 rebounds and had 1.2 steals per game for Montverde.
The 6-foot-7 small forward also represented Montverde in the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference, posting averages of 13.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 1.2 steals.
In a video posted by UConn Men's Basketball X handle, Liam McNeeley talked about his influence and how he started playing basketball:
“My biggest mentors were my grandfather and my mother. They taught me to play basketball and helped me develop my love for the game. I’ll be the fourth generation to go Division I (in my family). … I do carry a sense of pride around that. Continuing my family’s legacy, I wear my mom’s number that she wore in college (No. 30).”
What happened with Liam McNeeley and Indiana?
McNeeley chose to play for UConn after rejecting offers from Indiana, Kansas Jawhawks and Texas Longhorns. However, he signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Indiana on Nov. 8, 2023, in the early signing period.
After four months of signing the NLI, the former Montverde Academy player requested a release on Mar. 7, 2024, when Mike Woodson was retained as Indiana's coach, thereafter committing to the Huskies on Apr. 26.
Liam McNeeley is averaging 12.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.9 apg on 41.3% shooting in 10 games for the Huskies.
