Three-star quarterback Jamarian Ficklin has announced his flip from the Texas State Bobcats to the Utah Utes. Ficklin joined the league of 2025 prospects flipping their commitments as the early signing period approaches. The Muskogee, Oklahoma native, was reportedly being recruited by the Oklahoma Sooners at a point. However, the trail seems to have gone cold as the 6-ft-1 quarterback gave his pledge to the Utes.

The seeming loss of the prospect by Oklahoma has led to some reactions by fans on social media, especially X. A fan on the platform, @Nutoem97 was convinced of the Utes beating Oklahoma to secure Ficklin's pledge. They wrote,

“LMAOOOO OU STUFFED BY UTAH.”

Another netizen, Quinn Truther, also believes Oklahoma got outplayed by the Utes. He wrote,

“this the guy OU said was a lock.”

Another fan on the platform, Micah Stafford, expressed his frustration at the entire situation and the idea of committed prospects visiting other programs. He wrote,

“Wish he would have waited to see who the OU hire would be. It makes me sick to see players ‘committed’ but still visiting other schools. He was never committed to TXST in the first place…”

However, others on the platform were content with congratulating the Utes, like Blake Allen who commented,

“Late bloomer picking up recruiting steam late. Good get for the Utes.”

How Jamarian Ficklin went from being an OU target to Utah commit

The Oklahoma Sooners lost their former star quarterback commit Kevin Sperry to Florida State in November. With Sperry out of the Sooners’ 2025 recruiting class, Jamarian Ficklin became the leading candidate to replace him. Many factors had fuelled the thought that the Sooners were going to secure Ficklin's commitment.

Ficklin is an in-state, homegrown talent with roots in Oklahoma. While the Sooners never officially tabled an offer before him, they recruited him. The Sooners hosted him for their matchup with Maine on Nov. 2. He was also scheduled for a return visit when they played Alabama at home on Nov. 24.

However, the visit never materialized and the Sooners’ interest appears to have died a natural death. According to an On3 report, the prospect said Oklahoma reached out to say he was no longer in their plans. He said,

“They called me…and told me they weren’t moving forward with me.”

Meanwhile, an offer arrived for him from Utah the same week, and a visit was arranged for the following weekend.
