Sherrone Moore’s Michigan has a keen, undeniable interest in top quarterback prospect Bryce Underwood, who has been an LSU commit since January. Underwood has recently been rumored to be a target whose commitment the Wolverines are trying to flip. Getting the in-state talent has become a priority for Moore’s team given their quarterback issues. The Wolverines have no commits in the position in their 2025 class and the early signing period is just about a month away.
Moore spoke on the issue during a press conference on Monday. He said:
“We'll be fine...Obviously I can't talk about recruits, but we've been, it's been -- I think they see the atmosphere. I think they see what has happened. I think they understand the vision that we explain to them and what this is going to be like, and they -- it's been pretty positive. We've gotten got some good commitments, got some good guys to join the family and look to continue that trend."
How has Sherrone Moore fared as Michigan coach?
Sherrone Moore is a first-year coach at Ann Arbor. The 38-year-old took over after Jim Harbaugh left the Wolverines to coach in the NFL following an unbeaten and national championship-winning season.
Moore's first season in charge has been a disappointing one, with Michigan currently at 5-4.
One of the major differences in Moore's team and Harbaugh’s all-conquering team from last season is the quarterback situation. Harbaugh had the reliable J.J. McCarthy who completed 72.3% of attempted throws for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns. On the other hand, Moore has been rotating between three options at quarterback: Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, and Alex Orji.
To compound his woes, four-star quarterback prospect Carter Smith withdrew his commitment from the Wolverines, leaving no quarterback commit in their 2025 class.
What would happen if Michigan can't flip Bryce Underwood?
There is great enthusiasm around Michigan's chances of signing Bryce Underwood, with many pundits predicting the move. Notwithstanding, the No. 1 prospect of the 2025 class remains committed to LSU and there are no guarantees that he'd certainly flip to Michigan.
Bryce Underwood is a Michigan native, playing for Bellville High School in Bellville, Michigan. This is perhaps the Wolverines’ biggest advantage in the race to sign him.
However, he is not Michigan's only target at Bellville, with four-star safety Elijah Dotson also on their radar. Dotson is already committed to Pittsburgh but the Wolverines are confident of flipping him.
Insider EJ Holland suggests Dotson's recruitment might be the key for Michigan to get Underwood as the two are teammates and good friends.
Michigan is set to face No. 8 Indiana on Saturday. The team will hope to get a different result from the one they got against Oregon.
