Oregon Ducks signee Dakorien Moore congratulated his former teammate, Texas Longhorns freshman Colin Simmons, on being named a Freshman All-American. The edge rusher received this honor from the Football Writers Association of America in an announcement made on Tuesday. Moore shared the news on his Instagram story with the caption:
“1 of 1.”
Moore and Simmons were teammates at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas. Simmons was an On3 top-15 player out of high school before signing for the Longhorns. He made an immediate impact with Steve Sarkisian’s team, registering 48 total tackles, 14 for loss and nine sacks as a true freshman in 2024.
His performance earned him the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. Other selections on the defensive line of the All-America team are South Carolina’s Dylan Stewart, Oklahoma’s Jayden Jackson and Ole Miss’s Jamarious Brown. Simmons became the fourth Texas freshman to be selected for the All-America team in the 2020s, joining Xavier Worthy, Kelvin Banks and Anthony Hill.
Dakorien Moore and Colin Simmons at Oregon
Simmons and Dakorien Moore were part of the Duncanville team that won two consecutive state titles in 2022 and 2023. While Simmons signed with Texas in 2023 and has since made an impact, Moore remained in Duncanville for his senior season. He helped the Panthers to a 13-1 finish in 2024, although they fell just short of another state title.
Moore will be hoping to start his college career on a similar note at Dan Lanning’s Oregon. The Ducks had another disappointing postseason following an undefeated regular season, losing in the Rose Bowl to Ohio State.
Lanning and the program will be hoping for better luck next season, and Moore could be a big part of that revival. It will not be unthinkable for Moore to make an instant positive impact at Oregon, given the precedent set by Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith.
Smith also joined the Buckeyes as the No. 1 wide receiver in his class. He has gone on to become one of college football’s best-performing wide receivers in 2024, with 71 receptions for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Dakorien Moore has the needed skillset to achieve a similar feat, and Oregon fans will be expecting nothing less.
