The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs handed the No. 1 Texas Longhorns their first loss of the 2024 season with a 30-15 victory on Saturday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. The loss might have sunk the hearts of Texas commits, but count five-star safety Jonah Williams out of this list.
Following Steve Sarkisian's program's embarrassing loss, Williams offered words of optimism on X, formerly Twitter.
"1 game won’t determine our season. #HookEm," he tweeted.
With the win, Georgia improved to 6-1 nationally. It strengthened its bid for a championship in the Southeastern Conference at 4-1. Kirby Smart's program remains firmly in the mix for the College Football Playoff and a potential national title run this season.
Meanwhile, Texas remains a top contender in the national rankings with 6-1. Before the game against Georgia, the Longhorns held the No. 1 spot in the polls, riding high off the 34-3 win over then-No. 18 Oklahoma on Oct. 12.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged the disappointment of the loss against the Bulldogs but remained hopeful about his program's future.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t play our best football tonight, but we were still competitive. Hopefully, we get another crack at them,” Steve Sarkisian told The Guardians. "They've been the standard in college football now for about five, six, seven years and we played them really well in the second half.”
Jonah Williams and other Texas commits will look forward to seeing the Longhorns win when they face No. 25 Vanderbilt this weekend. Williams committed to in-state Longhorns on Aug. 24. This cycle, the school ranks No. 6 in the nation and No. 5 in the SEC with 21 committed players.
Jonah Williams shines despite position change in senior season
Jonah Williams moved from linebacker to safety this season. With the summer in the rearview mirror and football season, he is now a five-star recruit by all major recruiting channels.
Williams' first two snaps in his senior season featured an 85-yard kickoff return and a blocked extra point. According to 247 Sports’ Gabe Brooks, the Texas commit is one of the rare prospects capable of being ranked No. 1 at multiple positions.
Throughout seven games in the season, he recorded 25 tackles (15 solo and 10 assisted), one interception, one fumble recovery and two pass defenses. He has also contributed on offense with 180 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He also has 217 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. Williams is also recognized as one of Texas’ top baseball talents.
