Four-star safety J'Zavien Currence is planning to make his college decision next offseason. He has already taken trips to several programs, with Florida being one of the schools to host him multiple times.
Currence has made five trips to Gainesville and is set to visit the Gators again on July 27, marking his sixth visit. Speaking with Gators Online at Future 50 Media Day, he shared his enthusiasm for the Florida program:
“It’s loud and the atmosphere there is crazy. Just how the players play through atmospheres like that, the good, bad and ugly. The Florida State game, it was equal fans there with half Florida and half Florida State. Just intense environments.”
Florida's secondary coach, Will Harris, and assistant secondary coach, Beyah Rasool, have been diligent in maintaining communication with Currence.
“They’ve been done a good job of staying in touch, sending me messages and graphics," Currence said (via Gators Online). "They even called me on the way back from Atlanta. I was on the way back from a camp and we chopped it up.”
When asked about Florida's standing in his recruitment, J'Zavien Currence confidently placed the Gators in his top 10. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Florida currently holds a 15.5% chance to secure his commitment.
Currence is listed as a near-consensus top 100 prospect by all major recruiting platforms. He is the No. 97 prospect in the nation, the No. 2 prospect in South Carolina and the No. 9 safety, according to On3. 247 Sports lists him as the No. 83 overall prospect, the No. 2 prospect in South Carolina and the No. 7 safety.
What criteria will J'Zavien Currence look for in his college choice?
J'Zavien Currence has received more than three dozen offers from several big programs, including Georgia, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, Oregon and LSU, among others. But he is clear about the criteria his future school must meet.
“(I want) a place where I can pursue a great education, as well as football,” Currence told Irish Breakdown. “To know that if football ended anytime during my three years that I’ll be okay. I want a place full of mother and father figures that I can learn from. I want a place full of good people.”
J'Zavien Currence’s deliberate approach to his decision-making process is also illustrated by his comments to On3:
“I am going to take the recruiting process as slow as I can. I want to make the right decision. … I don’t believe in the Transfer Portal, so I want to take my time and make the best decision for me.”
South Carolina appears to be a frontrunner in the race for Currence's commitment. According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Gamecocks have a 24.6% chance of landing him.
Currence has visited South Carolina multiple times and he has been impressed by defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, who brings NFL experience, and head coach Shane Beamer.
“The culture at South Carolina is family-oriented and the coaches are great people. Coach Beamer is a great head coach and he has the right people in the right place. They are all real and true to who they are. That coaching staff shows the love and they really make me feel important.” [H/T On3]
J'Zavien Currence recorded 67 total tackles, five interceptions, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble and 12 pass breakups last season.
