Some of the NFL's most renowned quarterbacks are seeing their sons follow in their footsteps on the football field, with each son already making their marks as standout players carrying the legacy forward.
Several former pro QBs, including Brock Huard, Matt Leinart, Todd Marinovich, Doug Nussmeier, Carson Palmer, Chad Pennington, Philip Rivers, Akili Smith and Marques Tuiasosopo, now have sons playing quarterback in high school.
4 NFL QBs whose sons play the same position in high school
#4, Doug Nussmeier and Colton Nussmeier
Sophomore quarterback Colton Nussmeier of the Marcus Marauders in Flower Mound, Texas, is the son of Doug Nussmeier.
Doug, who played for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts and won a Grey Cup for the BC Lions in the CFL, is the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. A longtime NFL, CFL and college assistant coach, he was the Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator in 2012-13, when Alabama won the 2012 BCS title.
Colton has thrown for 1,240 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. His exquisite performance has had a great impact on the Marauders (4-3).
Colton's brother, Garrett, is the starting quarterback for the eighth-ranked LSU Tigers.
#3, Chad Pennington and Luke Pennington
Chad Pennington, an 11-year NFL veteran who spent time with the Jets and Dolphins after being the No. 18 pick in the 2000 draft, is currently the coach of the Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky. His son, Luke Pennington, a Dayton commitment, is exceptional at two sports.
This season, the senior has led Sayre to an 8-0 record, throwing for 551 yards and nine touchdowns without a single interception. Over his high school career, he’s passed for 4,575 yards and 81 touchdowns under the guidance of his father.
#2, Akili Smith and Akili Smith Jr.
Akili Smith, a former Cincinnati Bengals player who was the No. 3 pick in the 1999 draft, is not the only one in his family who makes high school football waves. Akili Smith Jr., a senior at Lincoln High School who is 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, has already committed to his father's school, Oregon, as his choice.
This season, Smith has 1,432 yards and 11 touchdowns passing along with 200 rushing and two more scores rushing. He has passed for 6,295 yards and 65 TDs at Lincoln in San Diego, Calif. ESPN has Smith as a four-star prospect, ranked 86th overall nationally.
#1, Philip Rivers and Gunner Rivers
An eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback and the No. 4 pick in the 2004 draft out of NC State, Philip Rivers, is now coaching his son Gunner at St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama. Phillip starred for the Chargers organization.
Gunner was named best freshman by MaxPreps last season, and he's thrown for 2,217 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. Gunner has over 5,000 passing yards and he is ranked 64th among the 2027 recruits by 247Sports.
