The No. 1-ranked women's basketball prospect in the country, Aaliyah Chavez, has had an incredible high school basketball career. In her four years with Monterey in Lubbock, Texas, one thing has always been clear: the five-star LSU target definitely knows her way around buckets.
Her 169-point onslaught at the Caprock Texas Classic over four games only further proves this point. In the tournament, which ran from Thursday to Saturday, Chavez averaged an impressive 42.25 points per game. In her 89-35 victory against Pampa, she scored a whopping 53 points, six rebounds, four assists and eight steals, with 27 of those points coming from nine 3-pointers.
And, of course, 53 points in a game would be a career milestone for many players. Well, for Chavez, it's still four shy of the 57-point record she set last year.
In the next game, an 89-31 victory over Americas Girls Basketball, the Monterey star put up 46 points. As if that wasn't enough, she also had nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Her team then faced El Paso Eastwood, where Aaliyah Chavez posted 44 points, 19 rebounds and four assists to lead the Plainsmen to a 77-29 victory.
The tournament final was her lowest-scoring game, but she wound up becoming the highest scorer. Although her team fell to a 70-60 loss against Frenship, she finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The 5-foot-11 point guard is, without doubt, a proficient scorer, a characteristic she has embodied since her freshman year, where she scored an impressive 1,001 points and only got better year after year. As a sophomore, she put up 1,020 points, and as a junior, a whopping 1,324 points.
Now in her senior year, she's already registering 921 points halfway through the season, bringing her career total to 4,266 points in 134 games.
