Xavion Staton, a 4-star forward from the Class of 2025, committed to Kevin Young's BYU Cougars on Tuesday. The 7-foot-tall center chose the Cougars over the Michigan Wolverines, one of the top-ranked Big Ten teams. Staton had offers from over 25 institutions including Stanford, UNLV and Michigan.

The Sierra Vista High School basketball star is the country's No. 31 prospect from the 2025 class. In the past weeks, Xavion Staton narrowed down his choices to UNLV, Michigan and BYU. The Cougars finally managed to land a second commit after Chamberlain Burgess verbally committed to the program on Oct. 31.

Staton cited the distance from home and his future plans as the reasons for this choice.

He spoke with On3 about his decision:

"The overall fit is it for me, with its proximity to home and NBA development. Being able to be around an NBA ‘program’ with their staff is important to me. It’s a place where I can enjoy living without having to worry about distractions so I’m able to focus on getting better and have fun doing so."

Xavion Staton believes Kevin Young's NBA experience greatly influenced his final decision.

"Coach Kevin Young is really building something up in Provo, and him being in the league before coming to BYU plays a part since he knows what it takes to get there. Coach Young’s playstyle at the Suns was exactly how I play. Rim runner, lob threat, defensive versatility, and running the floor," Staton added.

In addition to that, Staton liked how he and his family felt with the staff.

"I got along with the staff, and it felt comfortable being around them, and so did my family, which was extremely important. Everything else will come along, but he values what I work hard to do, and that means a lot in my fit into the program as well," Staton concluded.

Xavion Staton's high school career

Staton averaged 2.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 0.3 assists per game in his freshman year at Sierra Vista High School. He improved his numbers in the following season and averaged 7.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 0.4 steals in 17 appearances.
