Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell expressed his support for LSU’s Colin Hurley after the freshman quarterback was reportedly injured in a car accident near LSU’s campus. Russell took to Instagram with a heartfelt message, writing:
"Praying for you, brudda."
Hurley, a 17-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, was allegedly involved in a crash early Thursday morning. Baton Rouge authorities discovered him unresponsive but breathing near South Quad Drive and Highland Road, close to one of the campus gates, shortly before 3 a.m. He had reportedly lost control of his Dodge Charger, which struck a tree.
Emergency personnel, including the Baton Rouge Fire Department and LSU police, quickly responded. After undergoing further tests and treatment, Hurley was reportedly transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. According to his family’s statement, he remains stable and is expected to recover fully.
"Colin would like to thank the first responders, the incredible doctors and nurse at Our Lady of the Lake Heath and the many Tiger Fans for their care and compassion," the statement read. "Colin is resting and is stable while more tests and care are being administered. We are confident that Colin will make a full recovery from this terrible accident."
Officials stated that impairment does not appear to have contributed to the accident. The university has refrained from providing additional details, citing Hurley’s status as a minor.
LSU freshman QB Colin Hurley to compete for backup spot in 2025
In January 2024, four-star recruit Colin Hurley joined LSU as an early enrollee when he reclassified from 2025 to 2024. Hurley was just 16 when he became the youngest player on LSU's roster.
He did not see any game action during his true freshman season but featured in LSU's 2024 spring game. Ranked as the No. 357 overall recruit in the 2024 class by 247Sports, Hurley was listed as the 25th-ranked quarterback and 49th in Florida.
As LSU’s backup quarterback competition heats up for 2025, Hurley will vie for the role with transfer Michael Van Buren, Mississippi State's starting quarterback as a freshman in 2024.
Hurley’s future at LSU became uncertain after the car accident. Meanwhile, LSU officials have not commented on the crash's cause due to Colin Hurley being a minor.
"We are working through proper protocols with his family before we can have any comment," LSU senior associate athletic director and chief communications officer Zach Greenwell told ESPN's Chris Low via text message.
A freshman in 2021, Colin Hurley led Trinity Christian to the Florida 2A championship and was honored at the Times-Union Super 11 and Elite 11. He threw for 5,984 yards over the course of his high school career and was a top-25 quarterback nationally.
