Aaliyah Chavez may soon be getting national honors, as the No. 1 ranked prospect in the Class of 2025 has been shortlisted for the 2025 Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Player of the Year Watch List. In a Naismith Q&A on Sunday, the point guard was asked several questions about herself.
She revealed that her dad is her biggest inspiration and that her pregame routine includes doing jump ropes, stretching and listening to Bruno Mars. She then shared that the two people who have influenced her game growing up:
"Allen Iverson & Kobe Bryant."
The 5-foot-9 athlete was also asked to share some "hidden talents" that fans may not know about, and she revealed that she is good at TikTok and making people laugh. She also shared what she learned on the high school court:
"Everyone loves a winner."
Other players shortlisted for the award include five-star 2026 prospect Brihanna Crittendon, five-star 2025 prospect Nyla Brooks, four-star 2025 prospect McKenzie Mathurin and five-star 2025 prospect Sienna Betts.
The shortlist for the high school boys category includes Cayden Boozer, John Clark, Chris Cenac and Kiyan Anthony.
Aaliyah Chavez and Monterey bounce back after big loss to Kaleena Smith and Ontario Christian
The Monterey Lady Plainsmen, with No. 1 ranked high school senior Aaliyah Chavez, suffered an 85-50 loss to No. 1 ranked sophomore Kaleena Smith and Ontario Christian. The defeat was only the second for Monterey and the team already bounced back with two wins soon after.
On Tuesday, the Lady Plainsmen were on the road, visiting Caprock and getting a statement 82-14 win. Their next game was against White Station on Saturday, with the final score of 76-38 at home.
Aaliyah Chavez and the Monterey Lady Plainsmen are now 17-2, with their next game on Tuesday against Lubbock, and then on Friday at Tascosa. After that, the team will take on Amarillo on Dec. 20, before ending 2024 against Lubbock-Cooper on New Year's Eve. They will then travel for a contest with Palo Duro on Jan. 4.
