The Atlanta Falcons invited the Apalachee High School football team to their practice facility in Flowery Branch, Georgia, just a week after a devastating shooting shook the Winder community.

On September 4, a tragic incident claimed the lives of two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, along with two teachers, Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall, both of whom were connected to the Apalachee High School.

With the Falcons preparing for their Monday matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, they hosted the high school football team as a way of offering support.

"I think it's incredible that you get a chance to see some young kids going through some tough stuff," Falcons assistant head coach Jerry Gray said. "I always look and say, 'Man, what are they going through?' They've got to go back to the school where it happened." [via ESPN].

One of the teachers lost in the shooting also served as an assistant coach for the Apalachee football team. Nine others were injured during the rampage, and a 14-year-old student has been charged with murder.

Falcons running back, Bijan Robinson expressed his sorrow.

"I have brothers and sisters, and I have younger siblings … who want to go to school safely. Having that incident happen and having such a tragedy happen like that, it really broke my heart," Robinson told WSB-TV.
"I even talked to one of the kids (who goes) to that school, and just seeing her being in such a vulnerable space and just crying and still trying to have a smile … it really sucked. I just pray for those kids every single day. The kids, the faculty, everybody there."

Steve Spurrier speaks out against gun violence in the Apalachee high school

The former Florida and South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier posed the ever-present question of gun control in his interview broadcast on the "Inside the Huddle" radio show on WRUF.

Commenting on the tragedy in Winder, Georgia, where four individuals were killed in a mass shooting, including Apalachee High School’s defensive coordinator, Ricky Aspinwall, Spurrier paid his respects.

“I want to say something about another coach, as a coach, a former coach myself,” Spurrier said. "The coach in Winder, Georgia, Apalachee High School got killed in that mass shooting. (Ricky) Aspinwall is his name. He’s the D-coordinator there. And everybody says hearts and prayers go out."

Spurrier then strongly criticized the accessibility of AR-15 rifles, asking:

“Why in the world in America are you eligible to walk into a gun store and buy an AR-15 rifle? They should have a sign, ‘If you need a gun for mass school shootings, here’s your AR-15. We’ll give you a discount.’ Why don’t they just put that sign up there?”

Spurrier is a legendary football figure known for his Heisman Trophy win and a national championship with Florida in 1966.
