Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry Jr. expressed his disbelief on Instagram over the 3-star rating assigned to Colorado commit Quentin Gibson, highlighting widespread confusion over the low rating for the 2024 MaxPreps National High School Football Player of the Year.
“3 STAR ???? Smfh,” Henry wrote in Instagram on Tuesday.
Gibson, a standout senior wide receiver at North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, Texas, delivered an extraordinary season, leading his team to an undefeated 16-0 record and a Texas Class 6A Division 1 state title. The Panthers, ranked No. 3 nationally by MaxPreps, achieved their best season in school history under Gibson’s leadership.
Standing at 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, Gibson recorded 93 receptions for 2,009 yards—ninth all-time in state history—and 36 touchdowns, placing him fourth in the state record books. His versatility extended beyond receiving, contributing a 75-yard touchdown pass, 40 rushing yards with two scores and a punt return touchdown.
In the state championship, North Crowley triumphed over Westlake 50–21 Gibson, catching seven passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns achieved the status of Offensive MVP. More to it, his 75-yard reception on the first play of the game gave the much-needed platform while his three touchdown breaks sent a record in the champions category.
Gibson’s clutch performances included two fourth-down touchdown catches in a 36–34 semifinal win against No. 6 Duncanville, ending their 16-game playoff win streak. Against Guyer (Denton), Gibson had his season-high performance with six receptions for 247 yards, three touchdowns and an additional rushing score.
As only the second wide receiver to win the MaxPreps National Player of the Year honor, Gibson joins an elite group of past winners, including Derrick Henry (2012) and Bryce Young (2019). Despite his exceptional accolades, his 3-star rating remains a mystery to fans and analysts alike.
