Four-star cornerback Onis Konanbanny has been committed to the Tennessee Volunteers since Aug. 23. However, Josh Heupel and his coaching staff are currently fighting to retain the commitment of the standout from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School (South Carolina), as the Florida Gators have become "a dangerous contender" for him, per On3.
Konanbanny holds a unique background as a French native who previously lived in London and has been a prized recruit for the Volunteers. Tennessee made a lasting impression by being the first program to offer him a scholarship. The involvement of key staff members, including coach Heupel, defensive coordinator Tim Banks and secondary coach Willie Martinez, further boosted his connection to the school.
“They really wanted me,” Konanbanny told On3 following his commitment in August. “They don’t just want me as a player. They like me as a person. Tennessee likes everything about me.”
However, an official visit to Florida over the weekend of Nov. 23 has reshaped his recruitment. Konanbanny attended the Gators' 24-17 victory over Ole Miss and came away impressed by Billy Napier’s program, which gave the school an edge in his recruitment.
Tennessee already lost three committed players in its 2025 class in cornerback Shamar Arnoux, interior offensive lineman Douglas Utu and safety Lagonza Hayward. Potentially losing Konanbanny would be another massive blow for the Volunteers heading to the early signing period.
Onis Konanbanny is ranked as the No. 382 prospect in the nation, the No. 37 cornerback in the 2025 class and the No. 8 recruit in South Carolina, per On3.
Onis Konanbanny might delay signing to consider his potential fit in the Florida Gators program
On3's Chad Simmons noted that Onis Konanbanny could delay his signing to February instead of the early signing period two months earlier.
“I am not an early enrollee, so I am thinking about waiting and signing in February,” Konanbanny said (via On3). “I want to see how I feel. Tennessee is a great school, but Florida is giving me a lot to think about too."
Tennessee has 24 committed players in its 2025 class, ranking No. 9 in the nation and No. 4 in the Southeastern Conference. Besides Onis Konanbanny, the Volunteers also have three committed cornerbacks in this cycle: four-star prospect Tre Poteat as well as three-star recruits Dylan Lewis and Tyler Redmond.
