Five-star offensive tackle Josh Petty, from Roswell Fellowship Christian School in Georgia, announced his commitment to Georgia Tech's 2025 class on Monday. It marks a huge milestone for the Yellow Jackets, as the 6-foot-5, 265-pound Petty becomes the first five-star prospect to commit to the program in the modern era of recruiting rankings.
Coach Brent Key's Georgia Tech was the first school to recognize Petty's potential, extending an offer to him in January 2023. Since then, the recruiting battle has intensified, with Petty taking official visits to five programs: Georgia Tech, Florida State, Ohio State, Stanford and Tennessee.
Ohio State's heavy effort and a return visit to Florida State on July 28 created uncertainty, but the Yellow Jackets ultimately secured Petty's commitment. A key factor in Josh Petty’s decision was the offense led by Georgia Tech's offensive coordinator, Geep Wade.
"Coach Geep Wade has been building something out there for a little bit,” Petty told SI. “He’s made it something special. Some of the best pass rushers are in the ACC, and some of the best offenses in the nation. It’s going to be great to be a part of that, especially at an early age."
Beyond football, academics also played a big role in Petty’s commitment.
“Academics might have been what made or broke it for Georgia Tech, to be honest," Petty said. "They are better than any school out there, and I know that degree will last me 40 years. Seeing that as a 16-year-old kid is kind of hard, but a place like that, a degree like that, and the connections are unmatched."
Georgia Tech now includes 22 commitments, six of whom are offensive linemen. Besides Josh Petty, the program has also secured commitments from in-state defensive back Dalen Penson and interior offensive lineman Justin Hasenhuetl.
Georgia's 2025 class ranks No. 21 in the nation and No. 4 in the ACC. The program is also eyeing four-star in-state defensive tackle Christian Garrett, who decommitted from the Georgia Bulldogs this week.
Josh Petty's athletic profile
Josh Petty's journey in tackle football began in the fifth grade, and since then, he has evolved into a dominant two-way player. He was the only offensive lineman to get selected on the inaugural Mr. Georgia Top 10 watchlist this year.
During his junior season, Petty recorded 58 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception. His sophomore season saw him rack up 21 tackles and a sack.
Petty has also made a name for himself in wrestling, claiming the Georgia 2A state title at 285 pounds as a sophomore. He followed that up with a runner-up finish as a junior, concluding the season with a 29-3 record. He has also participated in track and field, taking limited reps in shot put and discus during the spring of 2023.
On3 ranks Josh Petty as the No. 53 overall prospect in the nation, the No. 5 interior offensive lineman in the 2025 class and the No. 6 prospect in Georgia. He is also listed as the No. 14 overall prospect nationally, the No. 2 interior offensive lineman in the class and the No. 4 prospect in the state.
