Coach Brian Kelly's LSU Tigers have extended an offer to Colton Nussmeier, the younger brother of the team's starting quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier. As a rising star in the 2027 recruiting class, Colton has already made waves in his sophomore year.
The four-star prospect has drawn considerable attention from top programs including, SMU, North Carolina and Oklahoma State.
On Saturday morning, LSU's offensive coordinator Joe Sloan made the official call to Colton. For Garrett, seeing his brother receive an offer from the university where he plays is special.
"It was cool, especially for it to happen on a game day. It's pretty special for him to get an offer from the place where I'm at," Garrett Nussmeier said via SI on Tuesday. "When he tweeted out the offer and he used a picture of me as the offer, it’s pretty cool ... I’m proud of him and the season he’s had so far."
Meanwhile, LSU’s 2024 recruiting class is shaping up to be among the best in recent years. The class includes 22 commitments, including several four-star recruits.
LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier eyes improvement ahead of SEC showdown
Heading into Week 6, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier continues to rise in the rankings as his QB rating is now at 85.2 (from 77.3 in Week 3) per ESPN. However, he understands that success isn't measured solely by stats.
“I think our best football is yet to be played,” Nussmeier said after LSU’s 42-10 victory over South Alabama on Saturday. “We made some mistakes out there that we’d like to have back. It’s good going into the bye week to soak up all the good things that have happened but also correct all the things we can be better at.”
He threw for 409 yards and completed 26 of 39 passes. He also added two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground. Despite his solid performance, there were a couple of moments in the game that got the attention of fans.
One of the more talked-about moments occurred when LSU coach Brian Kelly animatedly spoke to Nussmeier on the sideline after the second interception. During his appearance on "The Paul Finebaum Show" on Monday, Kelly addressed the incident.
“We’ve got a great relationship. I’m reminding him about the things we talk about every single day,” Kelly said. “I come across on a blip of four- or five-seconds hollering at somebody, but you don’t see the hours and hours and hours that I’ve got my arm around him talking about the great things that he does. That’s just TV. You take it for what it’s worth.”
With an open week ahead, the No. 13 Tigers (4-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) will focus on recovering and reviewing film as they gear up for a critical SEC matchup against Nol. 12 Ole Miss (4-1, 0-1) on Oct. 12 at Tiger Stadium.
