Thanksgiving is all about family, fun and a sumptuous meal, but for Alijah Arenas' mom, Laura Govan, it came with a side of humor this year as well. The mother of the basketball prodigy posted a lighthearted clip on her Instagram stories on Thursday, Nov. 28.
It featured a fun conversation with her father, Michael Govan, during the holiday celebration.
In the video, Govan's father can be seen teasingly engaging in a playful back-and-forth. Adding to the humor, Laura captioned the post with the text:
“He isn't thankful for us or my mom,” giving the moment a sarcastic twist.
Laura Govan shares a very close bond with her parents, Michael and Gloria. While she is quite open about her life and extensively shares moments from her day-to-day experiences, her parents have avoided the limelight. Only on rare occasions did Laura share moments with them on her Instagram.
Back in 2021, Laura helped his dad realize his long-cherished dream of visiting Dodger Stadium and watching a game there. Laura shared snaps of herself with her parents from the visit on her Instagram profile, giving the backstory in the caption. She wrote:
“My dad is about to be 80, and it was on his bucket list to go to Dodger Stadium & see them play! So I made a phone call... & then this happened! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you, @hollyrpeete and @rodneypeete My dad keeps saying, 'This is some fancy shit here.' Lol."
Is Laura Govan's father behind her no-nonsense personality?
Laura Govan, known for her candid and bold personality, has never shied away from expressing the truth. Whether taking playful digs at Shaunie Henderson, ex-wife Shaquille O'Neal, or posting a picture of a black sheep surrounded by white ones and captioning it, “That's me,” Laura is unapologetically herself.
So, where does this no-nonsense approach stem from? Renowned life coach Iyanla Vanzant once attributed Laura’s hardened persona to her upbringing under her father’s strict parenting style.
During a 2017 episode of "Iyanla: Fix My Life," Laura’s father opened up about his strict approach to raising his children. In response, Vanzant explained:
"It broke her heart. Your daughter is so, so broken. And I think part of it is because she feels like she’s a problem, like her voice doesn’t matter. And that she’s got to fight for everything.”
Despite this, Laura’s relationship with her father remains strong. She often shares moments that show her respect and affection for her parents, indicating that, tough or not, she deeply values the bond they share.
