Utah Prep star AJ Dybantsa and Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) star Tyran Stokes forged a strong bond when they played for Prolific Prep last season. The No. 1 rank from the Class of 2025 and the No. 2 rank from the Class of 2026 remain good friends, which became evident when Stokes hit his 1,000-point milestone on Friday.
Stokes achieved the milestone during Notre Dame's game against Layton Christian Academy, scoring 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. However, Layton Christian Academy still beat Notre Dame 54–53.
Because this was still a milestone game for Stokes, Dybantsa his achievement on his Instagram Stories.
Stokes and Dybantsa were not just teammates at Prolific Prep but AAU teammates with the Oakland Soldiers. They led the squad to the Nike EYBL Peach Jam's final last summer but lost to the Boozer Twins and the Nightridas Elite.
Dybantsa and Stokes were originally part of the Class of 2026 but the latter reclassified to the Class of 2025 when he transferred to Utah Prep. Meanwhile, Stokes stayed as part of the Class of 2026 but left Prolific Prep and transferred to Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks).
AJ Dybantsa choosing BYU became one of the biggest moments for Cougars in 2024
AJ Dybantsa choosing BYU, a school not known for its basketball program, over traditional choices like Kansas and North Carolina, as well as rising powers like Alabama, changed the face of college recruitment. SB Nation's fan page for BYU named that historic moment the second biggest moment for Cougars basketball in 2024. Only Kevin Young's arrival at BYU as the new head coach was ranked above this story.
While reports said a multi-million dollar NIL deal was struck between Dybantsa and the Utah-based school, the five-star shooting guard said he chose BYU because of Kevin Young and his NBA-level staff. The Utah Prep star said he wanted to go to the NBA as quickly as possible and believes former NBA assistant coach Kevin Young knows how to make it to the league.
While Dybantsa is expected to be a one-and-done, BYU fans have made it known that they are still excited about his arrival.
