High school basketball fans have reacted to the news that five-star prospect Caleb Wilson will likely commit to North Carolina. Wilson announced last week that he has trimmed down his list of potential programs to three schools, with UNC, Kentucky and Ohio State making the cut.
According to 247Sports analyst Travis Branham, the Tar Heels are likely to sign the No. 5 overall prospect and No. 2 power forward in his class (per On3). Hoop fans took to Instagram to react to the news, with some suggesting that Wilson won't be enough to take the heat off coach Hubert Davis.
“Why would he do this? UNC’s one-and-done rate is not very good. Kentucky makes the most sense," a fan said.
“We need a PF, C please come to chapel hill," another fan wrote.
“Idk if there could be a worse program to commit to right now as a five-star," one Instagram user wrote.
“Would be a foolish move if he wants to be a pro," a fan said.
“Please God 🙏🏿 🙏🏿 🙏🏿 we need this! ,” another fan said.
“Caleb won’t save your job Hubie," one college basketball fan wrote.
"If he goes to UNC. (I) feel bad because Hubert Davis is (a) terrible coach,” another fan said.
Despite the speculation, Wilson hasn't announced a decision yet and is expected to make his choice this week. While speaking to CBS last week, the forward said:
"I'll be committing next Thursday, it'll be on a huge platform and I'm excited for it."
Kentucky Wildcats lead the race for Caleb Wilson according to another prediction
The Tar Heels may be building momentum in the race to sign Wilson, but Kentucky is still the favorite to sign the No. 5 overall prospect, according to On3. On3 gives the Wildcats a 60.3% chance of signing the power forward at the time this story was published.
Wilson spoke about coach Mark Pope's style in an interview last week.
“He coaches with energy and they’re having a great year this year," Wilson told CBS. "They’re playing very good. Their system really fits a 'long 4' like me in the way that they play. And it’s a blueblood, so that’s one of the best fan bases and basketball cultures in the country."
Should Wilson choose Kentucky ahead of North Carolina, he will be the fourth player from the class of 2025 to sign for the Wildcats after Jasper Johnson, Acaden Lewis and Malachi Moreno.
