The top two teams in High School football this year, Mater Dei and St. John Bosco, went toe-to-toe on Friday. It was supposed to be a thrilling encounter between two giants of high school football, however, it turned into a blowout win for the Monarchs.
Mater Dei took care of business in dominant fashion, winning the game 59-14 and improving their overall record to 8-0. St. John Bosco, on the other hand, tasted their first defeat of the season after eight consecutive wins to start the season.
Let's take a look at three things to learn from the Monarchs' impressive victory over the Braves.
Three things to learn from Mater Dei's blowout victory over St. John Bosco
#3 Mater Dei blew the game open in the first half
The Mater Dei Monarchs came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they quickly established an 11-0 first-quarter lead. However, the No.1 ranked team in the country did not slow down, as they piled on 34 points in the second period, giving them a halftime lead of 45-0.
St. John Bosco had no response to Mater Dei's offensive explosion in the first half. The Braves' first points came in the third quarter thanks to a Maliq Allen's 70-yard touchdown run. Despite their early score in the third period, the Monarchs outscored the Braves 14-7 and iced the game.
#2 Mater Dei's offense had a field day against the Braves on Friday
Mater Dei's offense has been phenomenal this season. The Monarchs have consistently scored more than 25 points in all of their games so far and put on an amazing show against the St. John Bosco Braves on Friday night.
Quarterback Dash Beierly racked up 309 yards on 30 pass attempts and scored four touchdowns, whereas running back Jordon Davison carried the ball 14 times for 92 yards and a score. Wide receivers Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and Marcus Harris combined for 201 yards.
The Mater Dei team is hard to beat and Wyatt believes that they are going to win the championship this year.
"We’re for sure bringing the (national championship) home this year," the wideout said, as per SI. "As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think any team in the country can beat us. We’re the best team in the world right now."
#1 Mater Dei continue their domination of St. John Bosco
Mater Dei and St. John Bosco's latest game on Friday was their 44th overall meeting. The Monarchs have historically been the better side in this particular matchup, winning 30 games prior to their most recent fixture.
Friday's win was Mater Dei's 31st win against the Braves as they continued their dominant run against their state rival. The Monarchs got the better of the Braves last year when they won the game, 35-7, on November 24, 2023.
