Before meeting AJ Dybantsa, Devin Booker praised Kevin Young's transfer to BYU
Kevin Young left the Phoenix Suns after the last NBA season before officially becoming the head coach of the BYU Cougars. When he was still in Phoenix, he was Devin Booker's development coach and has worked extensively for the NBA star.
Soon after Young officially took the reigns as BYU head coach, AZ Central reporter Duane Rankin asked Booker about his former coach taking the job, and this was where the Suns star coined the term "KYU" before wishing his former coach and his family the best.
"I'm excited for him and his family. Somebody I developed a great relationship with. Somebody I wish I could've played college basketball for," Booker told the AZ Central reporter.
The two were close during Young's time in Phoenix, with NBA reporter Marc Stein noting that Booker had previously endorsed the former Suns assistant coach to be the new head coach.
At that time, Young was also seeking head coaching positions for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Toronto Raptors, ultimately landing at BYU.
