For LSU commit Bryce Underwood, Michigan is reportedly willing to offer $10.5 million NIL money over four years to flip his commitment. During Tuesday's video for the "Michigan Football Weekly Recruiting Q/A with EJ Holland," the host talked about the possibility of a five-star recruit flipping for Michigan.
"Until he signs with LSU, it appears Michigan is not going to back down on the NIL front," he said. "My confidence level remains pretty much the same as it's always remained." (6:03-6:12)
However, Holland acknowledged that Michigan's gamble may not pay off for the Wolverines.
“I don’t think Bryce Underwood would be considering Michigan at all if there weren’t a big NIL offer on the table, which is, you know, kind of sad. I think Michigan has really prided itself on players that want to be at Michigan. But desperate times and desperate times call for desperate measures," he added.(6:23-6:46)
Holland was asked what he thinks of the NIL deal, and the insider noted that Michigan is actually willing to put up some money on that front.
"Michigan has partnered with Passes and has put together an NIL deal that is significant because Michigan got some money upfront," said the insider.
"I believe it was a $7 million deal upfront and some of those funds or a different section of funds will be allocated towards recruiting specifically with Underwood, so maybe that 10.5 million gets a little signing bonus or something of that nature goes up a little bit depending on what LSU does." LSU offensive coach key to recruiting Bryce Underwood
As for LSU, the school would have to defend its commitment at all costs, though it was not the head coach that was vital in signing the No. 1 recruit, but his offensive coordinator, Joe Sloan.
With Bryce Underwood possibly getting swayed by a massive NIL deal, many in LSU were afraid as there were talks that the coach who recruited him might leave soon.
However, as concerns about getting Underwood aboard without Sloan arose, it seems the Tigers' offensive coach is staying after all.
