The Texas Longhorns secured a major recruiting victory after defeating No. 10 Michigan 31-12 in Ann Arbor on Saturday. Following the impressive win, four-star defensive tackle Myron Charles from Port Charlotte, Florida, announced he was flipping his commitment from Florida State to Texas.
This decision comes after growing speculation surrounding Charles' recruitment, which had been heating thanks to Texas’ strong start to the season and Florida State’s early struggles.
Ranked as the No. 134 player overall and the No. 17 defensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite, Charles' decision to switch allegiance has dealt a significant blow to Florida State’s recruiting class. As a result, the Seminoles’ class dropped from No. 22 to No. 27 nationally, causing concern among fans.
"Florida State is cooked," one fan declared.
while another added:
"Looks like FSU will be called ‘Portal University’ because Norvell still hasn't proven he can develop high school recruits."
Here is how other fans expressed their reactions on social media:
"And it begins," a fan quipped.
"Only took one game," another commented.
"He saw the beat down of Michigan and wants to join the party!" a fan said.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Charles had originally committed to Florida State in late June after an official visit to Tallahassee, but Texas remained a strong contender throughout the process. Charles, who holds 32 offers from powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State, expressed his excitement about his fit with Texas' system.
“I can play about anywhere that’s needed,” Charles told On3. “On the next level, they use their defensive lineman all over the line, so I don’t feel it’s a big adjustment for me, because that’s what I do with run-stopping and getting after the quarterback. It fits right into my playing style and fits right into the system as I get older."
With Charles' addition, the Longhorns now boast 20 recruits in their 2025 class, pushing Texas to No. 7 in the national rankings.
Myron Charles cites Texas’ relentless pursuit in commitment flip
Defensive tackle Myron Charles, a top recruit in the 2025 class, has flipped his commitment from Florida State to Texas. After visiting the Longhorns for his official visit on June 8, Charles also considered schools like Florida and Miami before making his decision.
In the On3 Industry Ranking, Charles is listed as the No. 118 overall player, the No. 10 defensive tackle and the No. 19 prospect in Florida for 2025. Charles spoke about Texas' recruiting approach.
"It was the way they were recruiting me," Charles told 247Sports. "They were one of my later offers but even though I was committed to FSU, it seemed like there were doing more than every other school. They just did more and I wasn't committed to them."
In his sophomore and junior years at Port Charlotte, Charles recorded impressive stats, including 62 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss and five-and-a-half sacks. He also forced three fumbles and had one fumble recovery. Reflecting on his development, Charles told On3:
"I’ve also worked really hard on getting bigger and faster. My hands are more violent and faster. The way I’m finishing on plays is faster and better because of my hands.”
The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 134 prospect overall and the No. 17 defensive lineman nationally.
