Four-star defensive lineman James Johnson is one of the emerging talents in the 2026 class. He has already caught the attention of multiple college programs, like USC, Auburn, UCF, South Carolina, Indiana, Miami, Florida and Syracuse.
On Thursday, Sherrone Moore's Michigan also offered a scholarship to Johnson for the Wolverines 2026 class. He shared the news on X, writing:
"Blessed to say I have received my 22nd offer from University of Michigan @JWeber_FB @NFMHS_Football @CoachPasquale @_CoachCottrell_ @MohrRecruiting @Andrew_Ivins @adamgorney."
Michigan has four-star quarterback Brady Hart and four-star cornerback Brody Jennings committed to the 2026 class. If Johnson commits to Michigan, he will be the third high-profile addition to an already impressive class.
However, Michigan will face stiff competition from the Florida Gators, who currently lead the race for Johnson's commitment.
According to On3's Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Gators have a 39.6% chance of landing the standout defensive lineman. Florida's 2026 class has three committed players: quarterback Will Griffin, cornerback Jaelen Waters and safety Devin Jackson.
USF, Miami and UCF are also in the race for James Johnson's pledge, with a 12.3%, 10.5% and 8.8% chance, respectively.
USF has linebacker Elijah Dias committed, while Miami's 2026 class features linebacker Jordan Campbell, wide receiver Malachi Toney and quarterback Dereon Coleman. UCF boasts commitments from cornerback Jamarrion Gordon and wide receiver Keeyun Chapman.
James Johnson aims to explode in his next season
Last year, James Johnson made a name for himself. He recorded 51 tackles, including 13 tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hurries, seven sacks and three forced fumbles. But he is far from satisfied.
"My sophomore season went well, but it could have been better," Johnson told 247 Sports. "I aim to improve more as the older I get. The team did their part every game, but we had some bad games where we didn't play as a team."
Johnson is also a standout in track and field, especially in throwing events. He recorded a top mark of 53-10.25 during his sophomore season.
James Johnson is ranked by the On3 Industry Ranking as the No. 363 overall prospect in the nation, the No. 35 defensive lineman in the 2026 class and the No. 69 recruit in Florida.
