Four-star offensive tackle Takhyian Whitset, from Antioch High School in Tennessee, committed to NC State’s 2025 recruiting class. He announced on Saturday after decommitting from Purdue earlier in the week. His decommitment marked the third for the Boilermakers’ 2025 class.
Whitset's decommitment decision earlier caught many by surprise, as he had been committed to Purdue since April. However, NC State had emerged as a strong contender in the final stretch, with recruiting insider Ethan McDowell logging a prediction in favor of the Wolfpack just a day before Whitset made his commitment public.
Florida State and Virginia Tech had also entered the mix with late offers, but Dave Doeren's program ultimately won the recruiting battle.
Whitset had initially set his sights on a basketball career before shifting his focus to football. The On3 Industry Rankings put him as the No. 672 overall prospect in the nation, the No. 40 offensive tackle in the 2025 class and the No. 22 recruit in Tennessee.
Besides these schools, Takhyian Whitset also received scholarships from Vanderbilt, Tennessee-Martin, Alabama State, Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Ball State, East Carolina, Liberty, Toledo, Tennessee State and Alabama-Birmingham, among others.
Takhyian Whitset opens up about his commitment to NC State
Takhyian Whitset officially visited NC State from October 4-6, just three days after, he decommitted from Purdue. The official visit turned the tide in the Wolfpack's favor.
"And I loved my official visit last weekend," Whitset told On3. “I fell in love with the city, the coaching staff, the program. The fans get loud in the stadium and they send linemen to the NFL.”
A key figure in Whitset's recruitment was NC State's offensive line coach, Garett Tujague.
“I like that he’s a straight-up person,” Whitset said. “We were in the film room, and he’s in there correcting things that I could have been doing better. I haven’t had really a coach that did that so far, so that’s pretty cool.”
With Whitset's addition, NC State's 2025 recruiting class now stands at 17 commitments, and it currently ranks 48th nationally. Whitset will join three other offensive linemen in the class: Isaac Sowells Jr., Michael Gibbs, and Kage Payne.
Takhyian Whitset has already made plans to return to Raleigh for the Duke game on Nov. 9.
