Four-star quarterback Carter Smith decommitted from Michigan on Wednesday amid the Wolverines' strong push for LSU commit Bryce Underwood. This decommitment opens up new possibilities, and the Wisconsin Badgers were quick to reach out following his announcement.
Smith is now set to take an official visit to Luke Fickell's Wisconsin during their game against Oregon on November 16 at Camp Randall Stadium.
Smith is also hearing from several other programs, including Clemson and Penn State. However, he has decided against releasing a narrowed list of finalists before making a final choice.
Among the schools vying for Smith’s commitment, Wisconsin seems to be leading the charge. The Badgers boast a 2025 recruiting class with 23 committed players, ranking 25th nationally. The class has one quarterback committed in three-star Landyn Locke.
Wisconsin's 2025 cycle features multiple four-star prospects like linebacker Mason Posa, interior offensive lineman Hardy Watts, cornerback Jaimier Scott and wide receiver Eugene Hilton Jr., among others. It also has promising three-star prospects like offensive tackle Cam Clark, edge rusher Nicolas Clayton and defensive lineman Torin Pettaway, among others.
However, this class also witnessed decommitments of several players, including linebacker Brenden Anes, cornerback Rukeem Stroud, defensive lineman Wilnerson Telemaque, safety Cody Haddad and defensive lineman Torin Pettaway. All of them are three-star prospects.
Carter Smith reveals his commitment deadline
Carter Smith is recovering from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for two weeks. His recent decommitment from Michigan has also altered his plans, but he remains focused on his future.
"It's tough because I was trying to early enroll and leave in December," Smith told News Press. "That's still the plan. But if it doesn't come to that I'll just wait until February."
Despite the uncertainties surrounding his recruitment, Smith has a clear vision of what he wants in his next program. He is looking for a school that shows gritty, hard-nosed football, along with a supportive, family-oriented atmosphere within the locker room.
Smith has thrown for 1,091 yards and 11 touchdowns, with only one interception in the seven games of the season. He is ranked by On3 as the No. 196 prospect in the 2025 class, the No. 15 quarterback and the No. 27 recruit in Florida.
