Josh Petty, a five-star offensive lineman from Roswell, Georgia, announced his commitment to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for the class of 2025 on Monday. He chose the ACC school over other high-profile schools such as Tennessee, Florida State, Ohio State, Stanford and Georgia.
According to On3, the 6-foot-4 lineman signed a three-year Roster Value NIL deal worth $800,000 annually, which will amount to more than $2 million by the end of his agreement. Petty praised the program for handling his deal with ease and for providing a "fair" number during negotiations.
"Tech’s been very easy," he told Atlanta Journal-Constitution."Tech’s been very cooperative and efficient with working on that. I needed that number to be fair. Tech went beyond and above and really have taken care of me."
Josh Petty is currently ranked No. 29 in the nation and is the second-best interior offensive lineman in the country, as per On3 Industry Rankings. He is also the seventh-best overall prospect from Georgia.
One reason for Petty's pledge to the Brent-Key program was the NIL deal. Although the NIL package of the OL may seem astounding, it is in line with the market value. According to On3, other five-star offensive linemen are expected to command seven-figure contracts, even though they have not yet announced their commitments.
Josh Petty's father talks about his son's decision to join Georgia Tech
According to the lineman's father, James Petty, coach Key's pitch to land his five-star son included a mixture of educational opportunities and a lucrative NIL deal. That proved to be the perfect selling point for the Petty family.
"The time that we spent there meeting the professors and talking about what he wanted to study was phenomenal," James said on Tuesday. "The coaching staff, they’re incredible. There’s a lot of energy.
"And then the other piece that is very exciting, is that my son and other athletes have an opportunity to put together a financial foundation that will allow them to transition in life and be able to address some of the issues of affordability." [H/T On3]
