Alijah Arenas has proven to be an effective scorer, and he has also shown that he is a very effective ball handler. During Chatsworth's Saturday game against Long Beach Poly, he nutmegged one of the players who was defending him and this gave netizens a lot of delight.
To do a nutmeg in basketball, one must pass the ball between the legs of a defender, and Arenas did exactly that. He bounced the ball between a defender's legs before catching it and taking it to the hoop. Arenas scored 40 points in the game, but it wasn't enough as Long Beach Poly escaped with a narrow 61-60 victory.
Despite the loss, fans were delighted to see Alijah Arenas's skills and many attributed his abilities to his father, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas.
"Gilbert got him hoopin like he ain’t in his life 😂💯🔥🔥," one fan commented.
"He gat a deep bag for his age. Shoutout to Gilbert and the kid's work ethic," an Instagram user said.
"This kid cooking both Brons kids y’all gon see… and wait till the youngest one is fully developed. Gil’s kids are DIFFERENT," one fan wrote.
Meanwhile, others were left in awe of Alijah Arenas's basketball skills.
"Getting nutmegged in traffic is crazy lmaoooo😂" one Instagram user commented.
"He has a special skillset man … the way he slows the game down is wild at this age, sky's the limit," Jordan Richard, founder of basketball portal Swish Culture wrote.
"This kid is a problem now & will be a problem then. This Kid is nasty 🤮 skill level is HIGH📈 he is a hooper Frshoo," one fan wrote.
Alijah Arenas's Chatsworth Chancellors have now lost 4 of their last 5 games
While Alijah Arenas has been putting up strong individual performances, his team has not been faring too well over the last few games. They have lost four of their last five games. Their only win in the stretch came against Crean Lutheran on December 28.
In the losses against Inglewood, Prescott, and Long Beach Poly, the eldest Arenas son put up some impressive numbers. He scored 34 points against fellow five-star Jason Crowe Jr. and Inglewood, and then scored 56 the very next night against Prescott. After their recent losing stretch, the Chancellors are now 10-5t this season.
